Boden have some flared chinos that get good reviews.

they were two years ago they are probably more 'wide leg' than flare

Okay- help me- what kind of trousers would you wear as smart-ish/casual when it's not warm enough for linen and denim jeans are too casual?

Flares are OUT. Having had a good run from the mid-late 1990s until about two years ago, they've been replaced by straight leg (blame Kate Moss who started the whole skinny jean thing, which then led on to straight legs being back in).

Looked in Gap at weekend and nothing- though have to admit didn't do upstairs- Oxford St- downstairs had nothing except sale stuff and new combo-trousers.
