Is it bad to wash your hair every day?

My (terrible, dry, fine, generally rubbish) hair looks better when it's washed, but from somewhere I have absorbed the wisdom that it is bad to wash your hair every day so I don't This means my hair goes from being just about OK to downright embarrassing from day to day.

Obviously, with my crap hair, I'm keen not to do anything which is bad for it, so have resisted the every day washing thing.

What's the truth?

You can wash every day. I have for years. Just make sure you use products for frequent use so as not to strip the hair of natural oils and stuff.

specialsmasher · 26/03/2010 09:00

OK. I tend to use heavily moisturising stuff as it's so dry - I'll check whether you can get frequent use stuff for that. THanks!

I've washed every day for years. I only have nine hairs and a nit and even by the afternoon it's starting to look a bit lank. If I was desperate I could run to Sainsburys on day 2 but no way could I lead a normal life without washing my hair.

specialsmasher · 26/03/2010 09:37

!! I've got seven hairs and TWO nits.

Well if it is dry you shouldn't need to wash every day really. I do but only as mine is greasy.

specialsmasher · 26/03/2010 10:15

it's just that it looks so frizzy / dreadful otherwise - it seems to dry out unless washed / conditioned. Sometimes I just condition, but nothing seems to help on the second day - will try washing every day and report back!

washing your hair every day removes the natural oils in your hair, this can lead to a dry scalp and poor conditioned hair, i think its more the products you are using are probably too heavy for your hair.

using a dry shampoo will help you get through your second day, its like a spray that you rub massage into your scalp and give your roots a bit of a boost when they are starting to go a bit lank, the stuff i use is called Batiste you can get it in morrisons for a couple of quid.

your doing more harm than good washing daily

MotherJack · 26/03/2010 17:27

Sorry - left the thread early there! Been out for the day. Everyone stared at my terrible hair

I have absolutely loads of fine, greasy hair. Yes, it is as divine as it sounds. It gets greasy by the second day, but I tried washing it once a day years ago, and it ended up needing washing every 12 hours. It is ridiculous!

I do use Batiste as long as I can get away with it. It is brilliant. Sainsburys and Superdrug sell it now, too.

My hairdresser was telling me about someone with frizzy hair and they started to use shampoo and conditioner with animal based keratin in it and the results were great. The animal based bit is important as the molecules are small enough to actually have an effect on the hair itself - plant keratin just coats it. It is expensive, but you also don't need much of it.

specialsmasher · 26/03/2010 19:09

ooh batiste! Never heard of it - will investigate forthwith!

Not sure I want to rub animal-based things in my hair but I might!

Thanks for tips

I have thick greasy hair, it looks dreadful by day 2, ok to go to the gym first thing but not much else I wash daily, feel horrible if I don't and my hair is in decent condition

wahwah · 26/03/2010 20:38

No problem washing every day with a mild shampoo. Dh has hair like yours and he has to for the same reasons. Mine is like a bloody horses tail in thickness and courseness so I can get away with 4-5 days.

MotherJack · 26/03/2010 23:19

Special:

Greasy hair + batiste = good
Dry, frizzy hair + batiste = possible disaster

If I were you, I would look at products for frizzy hair Batiste isn't one of them

specialsmasher · 27/03/2010 06:22

Gotcha! Still haven't solved the problem of terrible hair day 2 -

Is it OK to be jealous of horse's tail hair?

Right - I need a mild shampoo.
