shoes for bunions

Not quite ready for velcro sandals but where can I find nice comfy and STYLISH shoes that will accomodate the bunions (quite big but not quite Victoria Beckham standards)

Friend who has huge bunions wears velcro sandals as you mention, as well as hiking style boots you find in Lidl/Decathlon. But I don't know what 'stylish' means to you...

I wear a variety of Crocs, boots (when I can find any that actually fit) and Birkenstocks (with toe posts) and hope no-one looks near my feet. But I have an appointment at the hospital in a couple of weeks to discuss surgery (hopefully) where my GP advised me not to mention shoes at all whatsoever, adn focus just on pain and difficulty walking and driving. I was coming to the conclusion that it was either surgery or velcro granny shoes from the back of the Sunday supplements

Still - that's half way there - but the STYLES

Am longing for flipflop weather as I don't have a problem with open shoes. Crocs are I'm afraid an abomination so that is out.

Shrinking that is interesting - I have spoken to my GP who said they are not bad enough to warrant major surgery unless they caused constant pain and pain caused by nice shoes doesn't count!! Actually having looked into what is involved I might well opt for the velcro sandals option anyway

As a fellow bunion sufferer, the only place I've found that sells shoes that fit me is this place, Hotter Shoes. Not the loveliest shoes in the world but they fit and are comfy, and their customer service is excellent.

I can't fit shoes from any of the other places people have suggested, but maybe your bunions aren't too bad yet?

ShrinkingViolet - I'm that you got a GP referral. In my area they won't do it until I am over 65 years or develop diabetes. I'm planning to have the surgery done privately at some point because I can't put up with the pain for much longer.

I have terrible bunions and find that I have to wear M&S footglove shoes . I also find Ecco very comfortable and last year bought some really comfy shoes from there.

I'm also thinking about surgery though, as they are really beginning to ache and constantly sore from pressure .

Anyone had the op?

most of the shoes in your links Stillcounting wouldn't work for me (too low cut at the toes, definately not wide enough) apart from the Natural Shoe Company, but the styles there are "interesting" to say the least!

MrsJohnDeere - I went to see my GP 18 months ago as I'd taken up running, but my knee hurt quite badly, and I wondered then if that pain might be related to the bunions (which weren't actually hurting much at that point). So when I went back last week to discuss my feet, I already had some "prior" as it were. Annoying you can't get a referral - my GP reckons the surgeons are really keen to get people in to operate. Is it guidelines from your PCT do you know? If so, you might be able to make some fuss about postcode lottery treatment, get your MP in on the act as well. Admitedly you might not want the whole area knowing that you have bunions .

I have horribe bunions too - but I also have very narrow feet (apart from the bunion bit, obviously) so need something wide to accomodate teh bunion and then narrow at teh ankle with a strap to hold them on. It's nigh on impossible to get anything smart that doesn't cause me skinned toes and sore joints.

Try FitFlops - they do open and close toe styles. ((www.fitflop.com)) I buy them at Sweat Betty and John Lewis. Hope this helps!

wifeandmother thanks - I do have several pairs of fitflops but the open kind - I live in them in the summer!

What I am looking for would be ideally a ballerina flat or kitten heel (have loads of COnverse, walking shoes, trainers etc for caual)that doesn't look....well, orthapedic or aimed at the 70+ market. The problem with wide fitting is that the rest of my foot is normal IYSWIM except the protruberance at the big toe joint!

I am thinking I may need to compromise on the style aspect....

I bought my last pair of shoes for my two friends (as I lovingly refer to the Bunions)from an online company called www.cheerfulsoles.co.uk Hadn't heard of the brand before (Theresia M) but will definitely buy again!

Was after something for work that didn't make me look my Grandma and pleased to say lots of choice with or without the dreaded Velcro.

Whippet - I saw two consultants (at the same time, quite weird, was talking to one, while resting my bunioned foot on the others knee ) yesterday, and am having both bunions removed. One is apparently degenerative, but doesn't hurt much, the other isn't but does hurt, so they're doing that one first, then "we'll talk about the other foot". Then had a phone call in the afternooon asking me to come in on Thursday for a "pre-assessment", so I'm assuming that means I've jumped up the three-month waiting list quite a lot, and the op might be imminent. Will let you know how it goes.....

Arche sandals - very comfortable and they do a sandal with a toe piece that fits over your big tow and hides the bunion bit. I found a pair 2 summers ago and am hanging onto them for dear life, maybe trying to get another pair this summer...They seem to offer this style in at least of couple of pairs of sandals eaach year - here's the link

Is anyone still reading this? Was searching for bunion shoes and came across this thread, you are ladies after my own heart! Always looking for good bunion shoes and finally found this site www.meanfeet.co.uk/ which is apparently ALL about shoes and sandals for people with bunions, hurray! Some are not exactly for the first flush of youth but there are some really nice wedge sandals there. Just thought I'd let you know, the brand is called Fidelio Hallux. Good luck!

Stop the press!! Just heard from a friend who works in production that This Morning are doing a feature on bunions tomorrow morning; I know!! Apparently it's about what to do if you don't want/need the operation and it talks about the Fidelio bunion shoes and sandals which I got from the meanfeet website Meanfeet You heard it here first!!
