What do you keep in your handbag?

Millie1 · 21/03/2010 21:59

Is it full of bits and pieces, things belonging to the children or is it neat and orderly containing only your things?

I've just bought a new one, it's much bigger than I'm used to and I don't know how to fill it. Hang on, I'm not going to fill it ... it's going to be much less grubby inside than my current bag .

Quattrocento · 21/03/2010 22:44

It is very neat and orderly and only contains my things, namely

a blackberry
a mobile
a purse
a useful book for writing things in
a plastic wallet for receipts
a small makeup bag (lipstick, eyeliner, foundation, nurofen, tampons)
4 pens
1 pack of hankies

MamaGoblin · 21/03/2010 23:03

Don't have a handbag. I have an enormous change bag, and several different shoulder bags that I use when I'm not DS-ing.

In my change bag at the moment, in the order in which I find them:

-nappies wipes mat nappy bags
-sippy cup with old juice in
-water bottle for DS with old water in
-empty clippy box that used to contain breadsticks
-an apple
-small drawing pad and crayon roll for DS
-Iggle Piggle
-red Moleskine diary
-purse
-woolly hat for DS (must remove)
-gloves for self (ditto)
-tissues
-nail clippers, swiss army knife (in zipped and nappy-pin'd compartment!)
-paracetomol (ditto)
-phial of Penhaligon's Bluebell perfume
-chapstick
-hand cream
-stray raisins
-3 pens
-cheque book
-phone
-camera
-small knitting bag containing sock-in-progress
-shells from the beach from last summer
-piece of broken blue-and-white china
-a fossil
-more bloody raisins

Am of organised handbags, but tbh I was like this before I had a child!

Quattrocento · 21/03/2010 23:05

MG, I have children ...

But they are older now and I have my nice tidy handbag back

upahill · 21/03/2010 23:09

OK
So that I didn't make things up I checked what was in my hand bag RIGHT NOW

Here goes.

purse,
phone,
lipstick,
compass,
swiss army knife,
work keys,
diary,
new tiny digital camera,
head torch,
pen
Freddo chocolate bar (That will be removed very shortly)
iPod headphones

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 21/03/2010 23:13

I'm a fan of the organiser type handbag (which is lucky because my life is not generally an organised one). So it's split into sections including financial bits, personal grooming bits, pens, mobile, keys. There's usually a few stray receipts, tissues and chewing gum wrappers marauding around the bowels of it though.

Have always had a separate baby/child bag, it would require too much mental effort to combine the two.

MrsBadger · 22/03/2010 09:07

oh and in it:

my side:
house keys
carkeys
blisteze
jo malone lip balm (present, lovely)
phone
purse
cardcase
work id
hairband
bag for life
biro

childside:
tissues
wipes
foldy change mat
nappy
nappybags
raisins
playmobil builder

diddl · 22/03/2010 09:09

Purse, tissues, sunglasses (in "Summer"),keys.

aquavit · 22/03/2010 12:17

I have just got a new handbag half the size of my old one, so it has been slimmed down to:

specs
wallet
phone
keys
tissues
vaseline
lipstick, compact, eye pencil
pens
hairclip and bands
diary

all baby things in separate nappy bag.

Upahill I am fascinated by all your adventuring kit! (and envious of the chocolate)

Pinkmarshmallow · 22/03/2010 12:58

Upahill, definitely think chocolate should become an essential in my handbag too from now on...never know when I'm going to NEED it.

Pinkmarshmallow · 22/03/2010 13:07

What is a handbag anyway? The latest style essential? Where can I get one? LOL....almost forgotten what it's like to have one...just using changing bag every time I'm out:
nappy changing paraphernalia
spare clothes for DD
Bottle
Sippy cup
Bottle of growing up milk for emergencies
Lidded container containing biscotti for DD
Raisins
Spoons
Calpol
Empty plastic bag
Selection of small toys
Hand antibacterial wash
Antibacterial wipes
Tissues
Pen

Please tell me I can soon stop carrying ALL this around EVERY time I go out?!? (DD is 12months) It weighs a ton!

MmeLindt · 22/03/2010 13:13

I have one of these as I change handbags a lot depending on what I am wearing and where I am going.

In it I have:
purse
iPhone
headphones for iPhone
sunglasses
lipstick
pen
Lemsip tablets
Nurofen
Imodium
and a Swiss Army Knife

Pinkmarshmallow · 22/03/2010 13:22

Love that idea,MmeLindt

upahill · 22/03/2010 13:41

I like that too MmeLndt.

What bags are you ladies currently using for daily use?

Last week I used my:
An Osprey Tote bag in Black
An Ospery moc croc boxy style bag
A Betty Jackson Grey medium sized handbag
A berghaus 25+ 10litre rucksac.

FairyLightsForever · 22/03/2010 14:03

Pinkmarshmallow,
DD is nearly 3, I no longer have to carry all the nappy changing stuff, but now I have to carry a portable potty and a change of clothes instead!
I also have
A-Z road map
3 carrier bags
plasters
tampons
hairbands/ clips for DD
3 biros
tissues
hairbrush
notebook
purse
keys
phone

No wonder it is so heavy!
I bought a big trendy bag in H&M because I was bored of carrying a nappy bag everywhere.

crumpette · 22/03/2010 14:25

in my bag

3 nappies
baby vest
baby trousers
2 nappy bags
small pack of baby wipes
a hat that is too small for DS
wallet
pens
keys
always pads
tampons
mascara
blusher just in case I meet a long lost friend/tv crew and feel a mess
concealer for same reason
hairbrush
hairclip
lip balm
2 cotton buds
mini purell hand sanitizing alcohol rub (an obsession)
mini green&blacks dark chocolate in case of emergency (can't be passing out in public...right)
small old crushed up packet of 3 ginger biscuits (will be thrown away now I have found them)
fold up umbrella
land law book
mini lanolin tube
4 breast pads
part of a witness statement that I should have read a long time ago
3 important mortgage letters of DP's
a silk scarf for no reason whatsoever
a pink bunny rabbit
dishcharge notice from hospital
a cheque
8 receipts
a fold up bag
some crumbs..

and I have back pain...

crumpette · 22/03/2010 14:26
Pinkmarshmallow · 22/03/2010 15:42

FairyLightsForever, that's what I should do, get a big trendy one. But what colour to go for so that it goes with everything? DH asked me yest what I wanted for my birthday, I said "a new bag," to which the reply came "what do you need another bag for?" Aargh.

AbsOfCroissant · 22/03/2010 16:56

I don't have DCs, so that's why there's no child paraphenalia, but I do have:

  • Blackberry
  • Spare mobile (after I left my blackberry at home before going away for a weekend and NO ONE could contact me, so I returned to lots of desperate messages)
  • Filofax wallet (with 2009 diary; I haven't gotten around to buying a new one
  • make up bag with tons of stuff in
  • deodorant
  • tube of the cream version of my perfume
  • tampons
  • brush
  • comb
  • tissues
  • book (Count of Monte Cristo. It's very heavy. I need to read something lighter)
  • two note books
  • Assorted pens and pencils
  • Diana mini camera
  • a mini map of Moscow
AbsOfCroissant · 22/03/2010 16:57

Oh, and sunglasses for the brief occassions that it's sunny

MaMight · 22/03/2010 17:05

The amount of 'essential' stuff you haul around with you will expand to fit your handbag. Fact.

I used to lug a bloody great sack of important stuff around. Now I have a smaller bag and have pared down to the absolute essentials:

  • Purse
  • Phone
  • Nappy
  • Tonka truck
  • Tiara
  • 4 Rocks
  • Half of an elderly cheese sandwich.
Millie1 · 22/03/2010 17:08

Oooh, this makes fascinating reading! Your bag contents are so much more exciting than mine ...

Purse
Mobile
Lippy or two or three
Creme blusher
Hairbrush
Glucose tablets (for DS)
Tampons (of course!)
Tissues - too many - should just buy a packet
Receipts - oodles of them
Shopping lists - found my Christmas shopping list
Worm tablets & flea stuff for dog (found DD ttrying to open packet the other day!)
Breastpad

Shall now go and find nice make-up bag for my new handbag and maybe a small diary as mine is a kitchen-table affair and I inadvently make a hair apt for DT's birthday - oops!

Oh, gotta show off my new bag though it's much nicer in real life than in picture - it's the fifth one along www.abrotaschen.de/product/206
