Should I wear tights? Will everyone else be wearing tights? What are the rules?

I'm being a bridesmaid in early April. The bride has left us to make our own decisions about what we wear.

Will everyone else be wearing tights?

I am sure my granny thinkgs it is trashy to go bare legged. Does this still stand?

I live in the sun so have nice tanned legs.

Bare legged or tights?

And if tights, please give very specific advice as I've not owned a pair of tights for years.

Oh, dress is silk and chiffon and knee length. Haven't bought shoes yet.

Tricky one. If you are getting open toed shoes I would go without tights but legs have to be sheeny smooth, tanned and moisturised and good pedicure too. If closed toes shoes I would go for fab sheer expensive tights. But I think the shiny tights with slightly horizontal ribbing make your legs look awful so I would go for matt ones. For a wedding in summer definitely natural/nude colour for me, wouldn't go for coloured tights.

M&S and decent department stores have little samples of the tights hanging up so you can feel them and check the colour.

And my granny said:
'I know you hate lisle stockings when there's little in the purse, but when the snow is on the ground bare legs look worse'.
c. 1925! Lisle stockings are what Nora Batty wore wrinkled round her ankles.

Well? Will it?

How cold am I going to be exactly?

My dress is strappy.

Strappy dress in early April? Where is the wedding?

Do you live outside the UK? April in the UK could come as a nasty shock! It was freezing at my SIL's wedding, which was in May.

traceybath · 11/03/2010 20:46

No to tights.

Nude tights are just a bit wrong I think nowadays.

Nicely moisturised tanned limbs and you'll look fab.

TrowelAndError · 11/03/2010 21:07

But in early April, assuming the wedding's in the UK, her tanned legs are likely to turn blue, which is not a good look!

Whitetara · 11/03/2010 22:43

I would say with a summery dress, like the one you describe, bare legs. You could wear a very, very fine denier in a colour that matches your skin (not gloss) but only with closed toe shoes. Frankly fine tights won't add much warmth anyway, so you might as well go bare.

diddl · 12/03/2010 09:16

Well it depends on the OPs legs, doesn´t it?

Lily white legs always look revolting imo.

MaMight · 12/03/2010 11:37

Yes, the wedding is in UK.

Yes, live outside the UK, in the Middle East.

I am suddenly gripped with fear about how cold I am going to be. I have been jollying along thinking "ooh Spring, how lovely, blossom on the trees and watery sunshine". Bollocks. I am going to be miserably freezing.

Some nice thermals?

Is it outdoors or all in one venue?
