Why are the shops full of impractical shoes??

I'm talking normal high street shops, rather than anywhere that only "celebrities" would shop.

All seem to be full of high heeled fantasy-type things, which I could only imagine wearing to a red-carpet event (so never!). Obviously there is a market for this style but not for everyday wear surely? Even in a large M&S yesterday there were shelves and shelves of the things like

these

The only alternatives seem to be fugly old lady shoes or ballet flats!

Why does everything fashionable have to have such high heels??

Come on, this is capitalism. Wear the 'fugly old lady shoes' and customise them. Apparently lower shoes are coming in this year. In the meantime, Converse or DM?

Jbck · 27/02/2010 19:05

I know, I only take a 3 in a shoe and my feet are too small to walk in these types of shoes.

leftorright · 27/02/2010 19:09

God I know! I have just come back from trying to be treated to new shoes and even the lure of my mother's credit card could not tempt me into any of the ludicrous shoes out there!! I feel like I am 100 years old and have been orbiting earth in an unfashionable spaceship...

TheCrackFox · 27/02/2010 19:09

I honestly don't know how women can walk in those shoes.

I have been wearing Uggs, converses, ballets falts and gladiator sandals for at least 2 years now. When are dressy but not terrifying shoes going to come back in fashion?

MiffyWhinge · 27/02/2010 19:10

how can anyone wear SHOES at the moment, with all this mud and water everywhere?

Shitemum · 27/02/2010 19:11

It's for the same reason that little girls clothes are mostly pink and sometimes tarty.

DecorHate · 28/02/2010 07:52

I think for me part of the problem is that I never got into wearing heels when I was younger, they weren't really in fashion when I was a teenager plus I was tall and didn't want to be any taller!

I was talking to my dd about this last night (after collecting her from a party where I was a but shocked at the heels worn by some 13 yr olds!) - ballet flats, Converse, DMs were what we wore back then too. I just feel that I'd like a bit of a change after 30 years or so!

Clarks? i know, boring, but comfy!

ladymarian · 28/02/2010 20:01

I hate heels and anything uncomfy. I think I am 33 going on 53 but I don't care!

Nike Air Max, leather ballet pumps or Clarks all the way for me.
