I am in dire need of feeling like a woman again if that makes sense ,I am sick and tired of being frumpy and old.I have always wanted nice nails, not long ones just nice nails painted a good everyday colour,i am also a nail biter and would love to kick the habit.Am going away for a girly few days in a month and was thinking of treating myself, what sort of nails should you get for a first timer,if my hands are a bit scraggy can I have them done or do you have to get hands in condition first?Does it hurt and how hardy are they? Please help a nail novice!

They don't hurt at all. Your hands can be in any condition but do you need to have a nail to attach them too but unless they're bitten right down you should be ok.

I'd get gel extensions rather than acrylic as I think this will be more what you want and they're also kinder to your nails. Be aware, though, that once you start this you will be having to get your nails done every two or three weeks (depending on how quickly they grow).

I love mine though - makes me feel so much more confident, which is odd as I'm not exactly a shrinking violet!

It depends on the strength of your nails and the limit of your finances!

If your nails are quite strong you can have acrylic extensions which are nice and tough. Otherwise, gel or silk ones might be better (less likely to pull off weak nails) but are not as strong.

It doesn't matter what state your nails are in now as they will get filed down short and they will file them thin as well before the extension goes on. This means that if you remove them you are left with paper thin and very sensitive nails.

Filling in the new nail growth has to be done every few weeks and ends up costing a fair bit.

You could ask about having gel coatings done instead but you would prob want to grow your nails a bit first.

I have terrible nails and had gel false nails for my wedding. I felt great, thought that my hands looked feminine for the first time ever. But they do grow out quite quickly, I just took them off rather than having the gaps filled. My nails are very weak anyway and were even weaker after the false nails came off.

They are great for a one off treat but not really a long term solution for horrid bitten nails like mine unless you are prepared to spend a lot on maintenance. But maybe seeing how nice they look might help you to stop biting

I would say if you have anysort of nail extentions done, do not remove them yourself.

Get the nail technician to remove them properly, less damage to your natural nails.

I always have acrylic when I have them and have a Gel overlay to make them waterproof, you will need infills every 2-3 weeks.

They will help with the nail biting as obviously your own nails will grow underneath.

Oh yes - definitely don't try to pull them off yourself. If you can't get to nail technician to get them off then you can buy stuff from Boots/other chemists that will remove them.

try bio gel, more natural looking but not as tough as gel.i have had my nails burnt twice by gels and was very painful, had pus seeping from them and this was from 2 different salons, took about 2 weeks to get back to normal.i bit my bios off last week as needed a refill and it was very satisfying. i couldn't live without them now.
