3/4 length sleeves and other irritations

Why? I just don't get it. A perfectly lovely top with sleeves that look as if they've shrunk in the wash. I am henceforth boycotting said sleeves. Tops will either have short or long sleeves, no silly inbetween length. Can see it is cheaper to make, but so annoying.

While I'm ranting, why do children's shoe shops stop selling winter shoes at this time of year? Does anyone buy sandals for their children in February? Her feet have grown, she needs boots.

look it is SPRING you had better get sandals now or in May you will be complaining that only boots are available.

TheElephantInTheRoom · 08/02/2010 09:10

i like 3/4

fishie · 08/02/2010 09:12

i have got gibbon arms so everything is 3/4 length anyway. am knitting wrist warmers very slowly...

vesela · 08/02/2010 09:20

I have a few three-quarter-length tops from when they were practically compulsory (remember the late 90s/early 2000s when long sleeves felt frumpy?) and they're so annoying. I love being able to get proper long sleeves now and tops that are looong in the body.

My bugbear at the moment is pointlessly short dresses, though. I'm happy to show my knees in thick tights, but not so much bare in summer. I do have a summer dress that shows my knees, but it's closeish fitting and looks good. The ones with waists and sticky-outy skirts that someone has just chopped off at mid-thigh - stupid.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 08/02/2010 09:25

I like 3/4 sleeves. But then I have short arms and an aversion to trailing cuffs in everything like my DS does...

snickersnack · 08/02/2010 09:48

I probably will be complaining in May, you're right. Because it is stupid.

Agreed -- it's very silly.

I tried to buy DS a new hat when he was about 6 months old and it was WINTER in SCOTLAND and he'd suddenly outgrown his warm hat (large brains ) -- but no, it was February and were there warm hats in the shops for little ones? Were there fuck. Sunbonnets galore though.

Dumbledoresgirl · 08/02/2010 09:54

I'm with you completely. I have never seen the point in 3/4 length sleeves. If it is cold enough for sleeves, I want my entire arm covered. The ultimate stupidity imo is coats with 3/4 length sleeves. Even long sleeved things often end up too short in the sleeves after a few washes. I want to know where I can buy clothes with sleeves that come right down over my hand. I see young girls wearing clothes like that - do they only come from trendy young shops?

I am also with you on shoes. I don't need to buy any at the mo, but are the sandals really in already?

WingedVictory · 08/02/2010 10:04

3/4 length sleeves get rucked up over the elbows during an active mother's day! However, I must admit that even long sleeves can look short on me...

As for boots, have you tried wellies in Sainsbury's, at £3? If you want to spend more, there's JoJoMamanBebe, which does welly fleeces: if you get the welly a size larger and add the fleece, you can then use the larger-sized welly without the fleece once spring comes and your DD's feet are larger. (I'm sorry JJMB is an expensive option, but hope the Sainsbury's wellies will compensate!)

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 08/02/2010 10:07

I love 3/4 length sleeves, but then I have short arms and long sleeves are always half over my hand which is very annoying.

Meglet · 08/02/2010 10:11

I love 3/4 length sleeves. Short sleeves ,especially those awful 'capped' sleeved tops, make everyones arms look podgy (even a skinny armed person like me)I have hairy arms too so I usually keep them covered even in summer. And long sleeves just get rolled up all the time.

But, yes, 3/4 length sleeved coats are stupid.

EdgarAllenSnow · 08/02/2010 10:19

3/4 length sleeves on coats, cardigans and anything intended to be warm are bloody daft.

Even more so this/;ast year short sleeved cardgian - worn universaly with sleevs from another top sticking out - looks crap, makes your arms look shorter by ctting into two parts...

on a spring/summer top 3/4 sleeves can look nice if you have nice slim wrist/ lower arm.

though i still prefer long sleeves generally. my hands get so very cold.

Bobbiewickham · 08/02/2010 13:34

Ooh, I like a three quarter sleeve.

Not on coats, though.

MrsSantosloves2010 · 08/02/2010 13:42

Yay! Let's start the Anti-3/4 length sleeves League. They are the work of the devil. And yes, it should be possible to buy winter clothes at the beginning of f(&** February. DD needs a new winter coat after a little growth spurt but I cannot find one anywhere - it's all summer tops and shorts ................ Hello? This is the north of England not the Costa del Sol.

meltedmarsbars · 08/02/2010 13:47

3/4 length sleeves are just what you need in a summer cardie: just long enough to provide some warmth, not too hot.

I agree about the boots/sandals seasonal thing: tried to get dd1 (10) replacement boots for school - absolutely nothing!

sunshiney · 08/02/2010 13:59

Three quarter sleeves are slimming on the apple shape, they draw attention to the slimmer part of your arm. I am tall with long arms and for me it's got to be three quarter sleeves, or sleeves so long they cover my entire wrist

I like 3/4 length sleeves on anything except coats.

WingedVictory · 09/02/2010 09:37

I seem to remember that Jigsaw is very generous in the sleeve, such that even I has enough length for the cuff to brush the back of my hand.
