I have visions of being (an even more of ) an oily, greasy mess.

Yes, it washes off in the shower.
It is easier mixing a little drop of both and put in in a shallow dish, scrub it in to the skin then shower as usual. It works really well.

Would I be able to make a load and use as necessary or is it best to make-as-I-go?

It is easier to make it up as you need it - a little goes quite far.

How does using sugar differ to using salt?
