No idea but am bumping for you. I went to town yesterday and absolutely hated nearly everything (also 39 - for a few days anyway).

SixtyFootDoll · 31/01/2010 12:40

I like
Next - although not so much this season
Oasis
River Island

cornsilk · 31/01/2010 12:42

phase eight is okay
Reiss better
can get bits and bobs from M and S
Ghost but ££££

hatwoman · 31/01/2010 12:44

only for a few days janeite? i'm 39 for years

OP posts:
cornsilk · 31/01/2010 12:44

also french connection but they seem to do loads of short skirt lengths at the moment

janeite · 31/01/2010 12:51

Warehouse has a few nice things, although it's very samey from season to season and a lot of it is just way too flouncy.

Oasis seems to be getting worse and worse and the quality is poor. I wouldn't be seen dead in River Island, I must admit - or Next.

I like some bits in M&S Ltd Collection (although that is getting worse and worse too) and some of the basics in Autograph.

Whistles has a few lovely things but too many pennies.

French Connection have occasional good knitwear and dresses amongst a lot of dross.

janeite · 31/01/2010 12:52

Have never seen a single thing in Phase Eight that didn't look like a granny might wear it to a wedding (a very tall granny). Sorry.

cornsilk · 31/01/2010 13:00

humph

janeite · 31/01/2010 13:03

Am only jealous because I am a short arse. It just all looks a bit long and erm...wafty...to me.

SixtyFootDoll · 31/01/2010 13:28

Where do you buy your clothes then Janeit?

FunnyLittleFrog · 31/01/2010 13:30

Gap at ASOS.

janeite · 31/01/2010 13:32

Nowhere at the moment, SixtyFootDoll, as it's all horrible! The last few things I bought were -
silk dress - Warehouse
cardigan - French Connection
long sleeved grey t-shirt - M&S
pencil skirt - Warehouse

amidaiwish · 31/01/2010 13:34

i tend to buy a mixture from LKBennett, white stuff, FC, Gap, a couple of Joules fleeces. Jeans from Joseph. Going out tops from Zara. Urban outfitters is good for jeggings. actually all i wear is jeggings/jeans, with long sleeve thermal silk tops from uniqlo and a short sleeve top over, plus uggs.

can't wait for spring. so BORED of my clothes.

GeorginaWorsley · 31/01/2010 14:19

I understand what you mean,janeite
Am 43,and I like
Some White Stuff...yes,shoot me,I must perfectly fit their demographic.
Some Boden (nothing too recognisable though)
Warehouse silk dresses
Some Oasis dresses
Autograph trousers
Kew knitwear
Topshop vests anfd tees, also occasional tea dress type things
Some Great Plains,usually dresses/cardigans/skirts
Some Phase Eight, have a lovely black silky camisole that I have worn loads, ditto purple shrug, grey shrug, linen trousers, etc.Avoid mother of bride type stuff.
Noa Noa for quirky knitwear,dresses,skirts
Avoca for pretty knitwear, often via ebay though!
Clarks for shoes.

notyummy · 31/01/2010 14:28

Depends upon size/budget/style and lifestyle. However these are my favourites (am 38 btw!):

Top Shop ( Boutique or Unique selections have interesting stuff.)

Pretaportabello

Net-a-porter

Jigsaw

Very (Some real dross, but good search engines to narrow things down. Their delivery and returns service is excellent. I like some of their 'Love Label' stuff and it is all v competitively priced.

Mint Velvet. New, with nice stuff:

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 31/01/2010 14:30

It is difficult, isn't it?
My choices would be v. similar to Georgina's (I'm 46) - with the exception of Boden and M & S (our small town branch tends to be full of white-haired ladies), and I rarely like Clarks' shoes.
I occasionally find things in Kookai (most recently a long linen-mix cardi I'm particularly fond of).
Will watch this thread with interest.

hatwoman · 31/01/2010 15:06

thanks all - these are great. I've made a couple of purchases today. this skirt, this topblack dress this polo. doubt i'll keep it all - v hard to tell what it'll be like on. any tips for accessories or other ideas v. welcom. i'm after semi-smart going out/to friend's houses/parties type stuff mainly. in a bit of a rut on stuff like that at the moment.

OP posts:
brimfull · 31/01/2010 15:11

fever?? have never bought anything though

LynetteScavo · 31/01/2010 15:12

Fever dresses are brilliant!

cazzybabs · 31/01/2010 15:24

i like Brora (not that I can afford any of their knitware) and I like Anusha but both times I have ordered from there stuff has never been delivered although they have refunded my card quickly.

I like white stuff too and when I am feeling old white company and I like crew stuff.

SixtyFootDoll · 31/01/2010 20:34

OOhh I like the Mint Velvet site
