Dying dark brown hair blonde

Has anyone done this and been pleased with the result?
I am soooo bored with my hair, its dark brown with a bit of red, and would like to try going blonde but i'm afraid as i had a hair dye disaster when i tried to do it myself years ago! I'll be getting a hairdresser to do it this time and was wondering if anyone else that has done this has had a good or bad experience
thanks

I've got naturally brown hair & have gone blonde in the past. I liked it but did find I had to make a bit more of an effort with make up as I looked a bit washed out otherwise. Definitely don't do it yourself & maybe go for different shades of blonde highlights rather than a full head colour. Go for it.

thanks, considered doing it myself again in a moment of madness but i'll stay strong and keep away from the dye until i get an appointment!

I have dark brown hair and had blonde highlights put in a couple of years ago. I did really like it BUT it made my hair go so dry and it ended up looking strawlike so I have gone back to dark brown again.

If your hair is in good condition generally though you shouldn't have this problem. Mine has probably been ruined by years of hair straightener use.

Agree with Claire236. Definitely don't do it yourself. Get a professional!!

There was a thread about this the other day here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/899248-Brunette-to-blonde-what-39-s-it-like

I am brunette but was blonde for about 10 years. Don't go for solid colour - have highlights of different shades of blonde.

Agree, it can be quite drying to the hair. Regular use of a hair masque will help with this though.
