Help - need to find a nice outfit for DD age 10

Can anyone help me please? It is for a family Christening - so she needs a smart daytime outfit that is a bit trendy, but not mini-tartwear IYKNWIM. She has a lovely party dress, but I think she will look too dressed up. It's for end of Feb in a fairly cold location but everywhere seems to have their spring ranges out already. I've looked in all the shops I have access to (Marks, Next and New Look) but there is nothing suitable. Where can I look online?
She is blonde and blueeyed and paleskinned so strong colours tend to wash her out. She's a middle child and most of her clothes are handmedowns from big sis, so I would like her to have a nice new outfit this time.

Monsoon? The girls' stuff in there is lovely - I wish it would fit me
The selection of 'Day dresses' in 'Girls 3-13' are lovely without being too fancy and too 'party'.

This is pretty and has long sleeves, but might be too bright?

TheFirstLady · 24/01/2010 17:02

That turquoise butterfly dress is gorgeous, Jackie. I'll show it to DD. It would be perfect if she likes it. There are some nice things on the JL link too Pixie, we can have a look at them both.
Unfortunately, I don't think she will do Monsoon anymore, she thinks it is too young for her. She is at that inbetween age where she wants to wear clothes more like her 13-year-old sister than her 7-year-old sister IYSWIM.

Gah - I am sorry guys, but all your suggestions are OUT even lovely butterfly dress because then are not grown up enough and too much like something little sis would wear.
So speaks the 10-year-old.
We need trendy teen look here apparently.

Debenhams do Ted baker for kids?

Plonker · 24/01/2010 18:05

Dd has just turned 10.

She recently chose two dresses (primark) that are very similar to this one. She loves them.

May not be dressy enough though?

naomi83 · 24/01/2010 18:53

10 year olds want clothes that look like grown up fashion, so I'd say jumper dress-something that mixes winter/spring like this with black leggings and boots would look cool but not mini-skirt tarty.

TheFirstLady · 25/01/2010 10:29

Pixie - first outfit is nice but not warm enough. . She would love the second outfit but it is out of stock in her size.
Plonker - yes like that would be great, but again out of stock in her size.
Naomi - yes that sort of thing would be good. She has black boots and tan boots (both hand me downs from big sis!)
Oh dear, I hate this age. I had the same issues with DD1 (13) but she now fits adult size 6-8 petite which makes things easier.
Will keep looking.

I agree, it is really difficult to find grown-up looking stuff for a petite 10 year-old.

Zara sometimes have nice things that are quite dressy, but I'm not sure if they are online?

TheFirstLady · 25/01/2010 11:56

UPDATE - I have found stuff for her at Pumpkin Patch of all places. I hadn't realised they do an older girls range.
So have ordered this

and this at only a fiver how could I not and also this four quid I mean really
and, er, this for DD1
so I am done .

This is lovely
www.newlook.co.uk/1835865/183586599/ProductDetails.aspx would look cute with a little cardi too or a long sleeved top underneath.
Have you tried H&M they have some lovely things for that age.

plumblossom · 25/01/2010 12:03

Sorry First Lady I was writing my post while you were doing yours , glad you found something though, it's lovely.

plumblossom · 25/01/2010 12:04

I would even wear the striped dress myself .

TheFirstLady · 25/01/2010 12:06

It is lovely Plumblossom, thank you. She would definitely have liked it - but it was out of stock in age 10 - this seems to be happening a lot. Again, I didn't know New Look did a 7-10 range - they don't have it in our local store.

OP posts:
TheFirstLady · 25/01/2010 12:08

I think DD1 will love the striped dress. She can wear it with boots and tights for the christening and over jeans on every other occasion.

BigTillyMint · 25/01/2010 14:34

TFL, thanks for those links - I will show them to DD!

DO you think their stuff comes up large? DD is 10, and slightly below average on the height/weight charts, so would I get her age 12 stuff?

TheFirstLady · 25/01/2010 14:49

Good question TFM. I have got age 12 for DD2 because age 10 said a height of 140cm and I think that will be too small for her - although I wouldn't say she is much taller than average. Will let you know when the stuff turns up.

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 25/01/2010 14:57

I have a 10yo DD and am loving some of that sale stuff! Think she will too!

TheFirstLady · 01/02/2010 17:13

UPDATE - the stuff arrived today and they have tried it on and it is all great. So if anyone is thinking of ordering and debating between sizes go for the larger of the options. DD1 (12) is 5' 2" and slim and the age 14 is perfect on her. DD2 is just 10 and the 12 is good, apart from the jeans which are a bit big.
