It's difficult to say not knowing your style or body shape, but I think you can make your money go a long way if you aim for things that can be worn together in different combinations. I'm into layers at the moment, partly as I'm pregnant but also because I am sick to death with jeans and tops. After I give birth I've vowed never to wear anything that pinches me in at the waist and makes me look like a figure 8.

So maybe I'd invest in:
Some good black leggings (Next do some for £8)
A few pairs of funky tights (M&S do some nice stripy ones at the moment)
Longish tunic-type tops or dresses that end above the knee to wear with tights or leggings (if you like showing your legs off). I find ones with empire line gathering under the bust do wonders for bulgy tummies - this is just an example of what I mean - not saying get it as not everyone likes Boden!). A denim tunic dress can be really cute and useful in winter/spring/early summer.
A nice long cardigan or jacket that you can wear on top or button up to wear on its own over tights.

I'd either go to Uniqlo and blow it all on layering underthings (tops, leggings, skinny cords etc) OR try to find a really good casual everyday dress -- the kind you can wear over skinny jeans or with tights, ideally as comfy as wearing a big t-shirt that kind of thing. The kind you can sometimes find at Jigsaw (but their stuff is not so great at the moment)/Whistles/sometimes White Stuff/etc.

Tried to find some good examples but came up dry! Here's the last dress I bought that somewhat fits the criteria: here it is flattering and easy to wear, not too short.
