genuine question - do people still wear shrugs?

I want to knit a birthday present for a friend (she's crafty, she'll understand ) I found some cute, groovy patterns for shrugs but am now wondering whether she would wear one. She's quite hip 'n' funky - are they a bit last season?

I still wear mine but I'm usually not that swayed by immediate fashion (despite subscribing to Vogue and being obsessed with fashion in general). I like the way they look and think they can give a longer looking line to a short dress etc. Also, I wear shift dresses to work a lot and a shrug is a good alternative to a jacket when it's cold.
