Anyone interested in forming a "shop more wisely and less compulsively", "no more expensive mistakes" and "make the most of what you already own" thread?

There seems to have been a digression from the original intention of Penth's very worthy thread so, rather than cause anyone any offence or detract from what Penth and others were setting out to achieve, would anyone like to do a thread in a similar vein? Discussing potential purchases (advising each other for/ against in sensible fashion!!) and talking about how we're wearing existing pieces etc

Am off to Sunday lunch with friends but will check back in later.

Wearing purple Tam Tam dress, grey opaques, grey slouch suede boots, charcoal travelwrap for discreet bfing. Pretty exited about the sunshine so nearly cracked out the new OP sunnies but am saving for summer proper

have a good day all

LTEC - I have them (sandals)! And they are gorgeous

off out now - wish me luck (with my horrible hangover.

Looking forward to seeing the haircut plum!

hoxtonchick · 21/01/2010 17:57

this is what i'm lusting after today

LetThemEatCake · 21/01/2010 18:12

oh you wicked, wicked evil woman. Not only fuschia, but eelskin to boot

hoxtonchick · 21/01/2010 18:55

it's really beautiful isn't it. and i am cross, it would cheer me up....

GeorginaWorsley · 21/01/2010 19:07

I hate the post office trips too,but have a suitcase full still to put on ebay so am doing a handful at a time!
I like grey trousers with white tee/vest in summer.
LTEC one of my fallback outfits for late summer/spring /early autumn is
jeans
leopard print ballet shoes
black or white vest
open black jersey cardigan from East via Ebay
studded black belt
Silver necklace and bangle.
So I think your tee will be great.
Am at your success with charity shops,am in affluent Cheshire but never find anything here!

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 21/01/2010 19:39

Hello all - thanks for the view on the harem pants - I liked them as they seemed versatile (confirmed by MM) - could be casual a al PC Plum or smarter with a structured jacket and these shoes.

Hana - like the dress v. much

Mrs Juan - lovely pics.

Fleecy · 21/01/2010 19:43

I saw that PS bag on there earlier - was looking for the perfect pair of jeans.

What are your favourite jeans, oh wise, stylish people?

hoxtonchick · 21/01/2010 19:46

you really quite beat uniqlo skinnies for a cheap jeans fix imo. 25 quid & a great fit, what's not to like....

Fleecy · 21/01/2010 19:51

Are they long? In an ideal world I take a 35 but as that's often not an option, I'll be happy with a nice long pair!

I like £25 though - and they have lots of lovely colours too...

traceybath · 21/01/2010 20:02

Porridge - I really like those trousers and would look fab with the shoes too.

Fleecy - I'm tiny (only 5ft) but I like topshop baxters and 7fam roxannes. J brand are always very recommended too.

MrsJuan - oooh do you have a really good and honest friend who you could take shopping with you? Personally if I were you I'd be looking for the following:

  • a couple of pairs of jeans - one expensive pair and one cheaper for everyday. And I always like a pair of white jeans for spring/summer.
  • some daytime tops to go with said jeans and also a blousey/sexier/prettier top for going out
  • a jacket to go with jeans and also with
  • a couple of dresses that could be day and going out
  • a pair of flat shoes and some heels
  • a nice cashmere cardigan
  • some gorgeous underwear

And definitely get some colour in there and only buy things you love.

I do think that you should utilise the shop assistants too - I find that they really love to help with putting stuff together in shops like jigsaw/comptoir des cotonniers and if you've got a friend with you then you shouldn't feel pressured by them.

And I'd probably have gone way over a £1,000 .

bunnymother · 21/01/2010 20:06

Have to be uber quick as have to make lasagna (for tomorrow night) plus dinner for tonight asap. But simply can't till I have posted!!

LTEC - fab sleeves on that new M&S tee, and love how you have styled it! I have worn my diamond studs for about 3 months, non-stop - even sleep in them. Ditto my rings. Necklaces are out. Oh dear. I love jewellery, but DD does pull... Love the sea horse. And I love the Antik Batik shoes, God they are gorgeous!

Porridge - its a no from me on harem pants, in any form.

All lovely outfits - I really do think of this thread throughout the day and am trying to lift my game. Its also introducing me to new brands and looks, so all very inspiring - thank you!

Hello to all you new and very lovely looking ladies!!

MM - I am also hoping to be pregnant again soon, so not sure I should buy much (actually I am sure - I should not be buying anything)... Oh God, being pooed on, could our lives get any more glamorous?? Reminds me of a hilarious MN thread where the mums were all bemoaning that they used to be players and now they are in the playground instead...

Today, purple cowl neck cashmere jumper and black skinny jeans w patent black ballet flats. A bit whatever.

Will check in later for more sigh worthy clothes discussions. As Ava Gardner said "deep down, I'm pretty superficial"...

hoxtonchick · 21/01/2010 20:10

i am 1.73m fleecy (5'7ish) and they are long on me. but not dragging on the floor.

geordieminx · 21/01/2010 20:24

Hey ladies,

All quiet here, soft play/garden centre then train home to Glasgow. Waiting on tesco delivery, and am running bath - rock n roll eh?

Tracey - hair looks lovely - I'm trying to grow mine just now, and I think thats what I'll aspire too. Also really like the dp skirt - I quite like dp/matalan/new look for basics/high fashion stuff.

I hate shopping for jeans - being 5"1, nothing ever fits properly, and having them taken up always seems to loose the shape.

MrJuan - your husband sounds fab.

No more babies here I dont think... after a lot of sould searching over the past few months, we've settled on no more. - At least I can fully focus on wardrobe...

TS skinnies, black t-shirt and waterfall cardi here with shoe boot things and oushka bag.

Oh and LTEC - very impressed at DS2 lying on the floor in a strop over mini eggs... very advanced that... at 3 months

LetThemEatCake · 21/01/2010 20:34

oh P* off minx, you know full well I mean Master C!! >

quick check in before friends arrive for dinner (sushi, mmmmm) - am still wearing today's offering - brown tam tam dress over purple AV tee, plum opaques & brown boots. Was also carrying oushka bag today, the plum phoenix, and sporting a bright chunky turquoisey knitted scarf.

porridge - can't remember whether you're tall? one of my tall friends wears harem pants and they look ace, she's not even a beanpole, has adequate bummage. I'd wear by day with those bejewelled Antik flats I linked to earlier, the plainest of plain tanks and a stack of bangles .. by night, more or less same but with 'fierce', gladiatorial heels and big hoppy earrings.

mrsjuan - I am mentally spending your £1000 and will post my suggestions anon ...

OP posts:
LetThemEatCake · 21/01/2010 20:35

hells - am beginning to think we were separated at birth

OP posts:
Fleecy · 21/01/2010 20:42

I've shortlisted both the Roxanne and a pair of dark blue J Brand skinnies so good to know I'm not totally wrong. Will have to wait on them though as just putting wishlist together, not actually buying. Yet...

mrsjuan · 21/01/2010 20:47

tracey Wow - that comptoir des cotonniers stuff is gorgeous.

Yes - underwear is probably a priority (husband will be grateful). I am still wearing my comfy pregnancy pants most of the time and have no idea what bra size I am now having been everything from an A to an E in the last year!

I could probably persuade my sister to come shopping - she is more adventurous than me but seems to know the sort of things that work well together -plus she's more likely to be honest than a friend.

I am very of all your lovely outfits and styling.

LetThemEatCake · 21/01/2010 20:53

hoopy earrings , obv

OP posts:
mrsjuan · 21/01/2010 20:58

And there I was imagining you in these LTEC

PCPlumIsMyHomeboy · 21/01/2010 21:01

not these?

monkeysmama · 21/01/2010 22:10

This is the jacket I am in love with it. I've just showed it to dp but there is no way it is going to be mine. Anyone seen anything similar for a lot less money?

LOL at the earrings btw.

And MrsJuan I can thoroughly recommend getting properly measured and investing in some good bras. It makes a world of difference.

dexter73 · 21/01/2010 22:27

monkeysmama - how about Uniqlo?

Feelingoptimistic · 21/01/2010 22:30

Oh my god ! I love that hot pink bag. But staying away....
I have already been bad - ordered one of those Vanessa Bruno l/s tshirts on the outnet that someone here mentioned (thank you !) - my excuse is that they are great, and I l/s black fitted top is an essential for me.
