(well, sort of Style) 1970s fancy dress help needed

NorbertDentressangle · 16/01/2010 12:07

Right, DP and I have been invited to a 1970s party and need help. I realise that its hardly Style and Beauty as we know it but does anyone venture into Parties topic unless to discuss the pros and cons of party bags?

Any ideas?

Anything out there on the High Street that could pass as 70s gear?
Any psychedelic tunics in the sales?
Any simple outfits that I might have the basics of in my wardrobe?

I will trawl the charity shops Monday but I think they've cottoned on to the "value" of great dressing up/fancy dress items and tend to sell them to specialist retro shops or on ebay.

a maxi dress and a shawl?

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 16/01/2010 12:14

Hi Norbert,

You want a maxi dress and floppy hat I reckon.

TKMaxx?
River Island?

NorbertDentressangle · 16/01/2010 12:18

aah yes , a maxi dress.

I should be able to pick one up in the sales shouldn't I?

Really don't want to spend a fortune but at the same time I want to make a bit of an effort.

What about DP?

For DP:

nylon/ brightly coloured shirt with a tank top,
flares ( you can add inserts to a pair of his old trouders)
slicked down hair with side parting
heavy frame glasses
Cord jacket with elbow patches

Gorgeous

Loads of stuff from a couple of years ago would qualify, I reckon! All those zigzags, hideous large prints in orange and brown- urgh. Flared trousers/jeans, pref hipsters and if you can get them in moleskin, so much the better; cheesecloth blouses in the gypsy style, or with big "leg of mutton" sleeves combined with a tanktop; ponchos; head bands with beads in; large coloured sunglasses with round lenses...

HTH

KnottyLocks · 16/01/2010 12:28

sorry trousers

thumbwitch · 16/01/2010 12:30

oh yes, forgot about DH. Kevin Keegan wig, false moustache, tight velvet single breasted jacket in brown or purple. Actually everything too tight and in brown if possible, including nylon shirt and knitted tie (think OU tv prorammes).

tethersend · 16/01/2010 14:11

What size are you? Budget?

1970s is my area of expertise

NorbertDentressangle · 16/01/2010 17:14

thanks for ideas so far

tethersend - Size -I'm 5'6" generally a 12 (sometimes a 10 if its generous)

Budget - not really set one but it costs around £20/25 to hire an outfit so if I can get it for less that would be good.

Hmmm... how about this if you have time for auction? Or this?

Just team with thin headband and 70s makeup, you'll look fab.

Or, for a different look, this is my fave. But be quick, only 2 hrs left at time of posting!

tethersend · 16/01/2010 17:34

Don't forget false eyelashes and backcombed hair if you go for the short dress look...

tethersend · 16/01/2010 17:35

And white tights.

NorbertDentressangle · 16/01/2010 17:36

Of the 3 I prefer the last one. The pattern and colours are great but the style is a little..er... frumpy

I just have visions of everyone else looking very glam and sexy and I'll look like a 1970s garish sofa

I do appreciate your help though, honestly!

cocolepew · 16/01/2010 17:38

There's a Parties topic?

tethersend · 16/01/2010 17:38

Ah... if it's frumpy you're doing it right

I will keep searching for something more glam- but the key to being glamourous is in the hair and make-up, I promise.

tethersend · 16/01/2010 17:47

more glam?

Hard to find something within budget, but still trying!

NorbertDentressangle · 16/01/2010 17:48

cocolepew -I was going to post on there but I don't think people look in the parties topic. Also I thought the S&B regulars might have spotted something on their trawl through the sales.

tethersend -ooh, false eyelashes. Never worn them but always fancied trying them. Nows my chance!

OP posts:
tethersend · 16/01/2010 17:49

long again, but I like it

cocolepew · 16/01/2010 17:49

Well blow me down.

Lots of blue shadow, applied all the way up to your eyebrows.

NorbertDentressangle · 16/01/2010 17:53

tethersend lol -I'd look like a (1970s) banana

What about something like this with an afro wig or flicky Charlie'a Angels style hairdo? Add shed loads of plastic bling.

You could wear it in the summer/ on hols with modern accessories.

KnottyLocks · 16/01/2010 18:31

They have others in the sale too.
