Hair Loss - at what stage does it become a problem?

I often start loosing a bit of hair when I wash it which indictes to me that I need to get my hair cut

I'd usually get my hair cut every 4/6 months however I got it cut right at the start of Dec and I'm starting to loose hair and a good bit (more than usually) when I wash it and also brush it

I've just pushed my hair away from my face and a good bit came out

It's coming out in actually handfuls (i.e it's not leaving any bald patches) but at what stage should I start to be concerned? Anyone with any experience of same?

Have you recently been pregnant or stopped breastfeeding? These two things can result in hair loss.

Cna you think of any other reasons for the hair loss?

No youngests is now three and 6 months. Haven't breastfed for years!

I've just had heart surgery (not major) but can't see how that would effect my hair

I think it's possible that any unusual stress to your body (eg; heart surgery) can result in hair loss a few months later - this has a name but I can't remember it!

I think you should ask your GP for advice.

Will mention it to him - I'll google it now and see if I can find the name

I always lose a fair amount in Autumn/Winter and then get horrible little straggy regrowth hairs near hairline in spring. One 'test' apparently of whether the hair was at the end of its natural cycle is if you examine one that has fallen out to see whether it has a kind of tiny little bulb bit at the root end (no - not a cootie egg! - something that's part of the hair as it 'let's go'). But you seem to me losing a bit more than normal for winter so, as others, suggest, asking GP. The pill (stopping/starting) and, I believe, things like blood thinning etc drugs can also affect growth (maybe you were given medicine after surgery?? - in any case good to discuss with GP).
