Help. I'm in danger of looking like a badger.

Quite suddenly I've got loads of grey hair. It seems to be mainly in streaks at the front - hence thread title.

It is naturally mid-dark brown. I have very pale skin and light blue eyes. For years I've been dying it a bright but dark shade of auburn, which I think quite suits me. I think I've got to steer clear of the red from now on though, as I am worried the grey bits will end up really bright.

I don't have loads of money (or time) to keep going to a salon, so probably need to stick to the home-dye jobs.

Your thoughts ladies?

Oh- and please don't say 'leave it and go old gracefully'. I'm not ready for that yet!

I thought I didnt have the time or money to go to a salon all the time but have decided its worth it - it just looks so much better. Could you even go to a salon at first to get their advice about what colour you should do it and then touch it up yourself inbetween visits? The Badger look is not a good one!!

In same boat - one thing that I've picked up is that red shades are best avoided when there's more grey than dark as it ends up looking a really strange shade.

Def worth having one visit to a salon to see a colour specialist and get good objective advice on what suits you then maybe alternate between doing it at home and goind to salon to eke it out?

So with you on the not ready to go grey.

Thanks - you've convinced me I need some professional help.

The question is -
do I go lighter/highlights to blend in the grey (will my dark roots look awful)
or
do I try to match my natural colour and deal with grey roots.

Which will allow longer time between dye-jobs?
Which will be less annoying?

Any words of wisdom will be gratefully recieved.

Have you thought about trying to find a home-based hairdresser you could go to, or a mobile one - I've found they're cheaper than a salon, but still a professional!

LovelyBertha · 07/01/2010 20:59

Oooh- I hadn't thought of that! Shall ask around. Thank you LaTristesse.

One vote for lighter then.
Do you mean highlights Ruby?

I'm so clueless about hair stuff- sorry.
