Ds has written to Father Christmas for hair gel so that he can 'make his hair stick up like a punk'. Is it actually hair gel he needs?

Won't it just flop over? He's got floppy curly hair, kind of longish (I don't mean long round his shoulders but sort of shaggy on top long)

It needs to be something that will wash out - i have terrible memories of using pomade to make my hair stick up and then weeks of people asking if it had been raining out

I believe sugar water works well. Makes your hair brittle though

Gel would do it, you just need to look for the right one - get one that says it sets hard. Something like this

FrannyandZooey · 14/12/2009 21:57

oh man, 'ultra strong power hold gel'
this is actually going to work, isn't it? do i HAVE to buy it for him?

doubledee that sounds fab and more ecological than ultra strong power hold gel, but i have to be able to wrap it up and put it in a stocking unfortunately

My yr6s have VERY spiky hair atm, I asked out of curiosity and the resounding answer was WET LOOK GEL. Bleurgh! They also stressed the importance of getting extra strong

spookycharlotte121 · 14/12/2009 22:15

i was recommeded to use cream on ds's hair by his barber..... they sell it in the mens section of the super market.
Ds is only young so his hair is quite fine and gel is too heavy for it.... how old is your ds?

NotQuiteCockney · 14/12/2009 22:18

Oh, Frances, I stuck DS1's hair up really well today, this stuff smelled like glue but washed out just fine. I'll get the brand name for you tomorrow ...

FrannyandZooey · 15/12/2009 08:54

hello NQC! thank you all, he is 6, and we don't really like to wash his hair a lot, so this is a bit of a pain, but it's the one thing he has asked for (well the one thing i am prepared to actually get ) so i would like to sort it out for him

The loreal stuff is quite good it washes out well too - although DS1 moans every day because he has to wash his hair to get rid of it.
Shockwaves is good to DH uses it (don't ask)

NotQuiteCockney · 15/12/2009 09:43

Fudge Hard Stuff is what we have. DS1's hair went straight up, and he apparently had the best hair of anyone in his house. Looked like a rooster, and took like 5 minutes to do.

WoTmania · 15/12/2009 12:54

Soap, sugar water or PVA glue (the glue was a tip form a punk whose mohawk, when up was about 9-10 inches. he reckoned nothing else held)

Carrotfly · 15/12/2009 12:56

If he's got long floppy hair, then unless you go down the PVA glue route then in my experience nowt will work.

Still, its a phase ....
