I have just bought a skirt - a very short skirt - and I need help now.....

it's one of those tartan skirts from New Look (except I didn't get it in new look I got in the "gently worn" clothes shop in town for £2).

I've got some knee length black boots to wear with them.

My legs are ok (well actually they're a bit short - would prefer another 4 or 5 inches in length) - but having put on lots of weight while pregnant, and got stretch marks etc etc I can't really show skin......so it's either leggings or tights underneath.

So question one - no-one is going to see the "bottom" of the leggings or tights - so does it matter which I wear? And should I avoid any material/denier?

Question no.2 - most crucial one....

What sort of top do I wear with it???? I' have middle sized norks (30D) so not fantastically well endowed - but not that small either), and I'm a bit of a wuss so I don't want to freeze my norks off walking between pubs/going out for a fag.

OTOH I don't want to roast when making a tit of myself on the dance floor.

So suggestions for types of tops to wear please.

This is all rather important as DH and I are going out on Friday night (I would saying "clubbing" - but we have no clubs here) as it's our 10th Anniversary so I want to look half decent (he always looks blooody good even when he's "not really dressed up" for a night out with the lads..........)

I would wear leggings, hate tights. You 70 denier. Avoidance - wet look leggings! Also no black jeggings (jeans leggings).

A black drapey jersey material top - try H & M.

alwayslookingforanswers · 08/12/2009 17:00

ok shall avoid wet look leggings and jeggings. Do you mean that if I go for tights I want 70 denier ones - or to avoid those..

I'm actually going to be scouring the charity shops (and my new beloved "gently worn" clothes shop this week) looking for something - so any links to the sort of thing that people think would work with it would be helpful.

I live in jeans, during the day for everyday wear, and even going out for a drink - well apart from in summer when I have a small selection of strapless dressed that I occasionally wear.......this is a whole new dimension for me .

Actually last time I wore a skirt that came more than about 1inch above my knees was ermm........never

DH is going to have a shock when he sees me in it

Ooh sorry - yes legs need to be really dark to look good, so 70 denier is ideal although anything above 50 should be okish.

I am presuming the skirt is red and black tartan?

Will try to find top links

WingedVictory · 08/12/2009 17:10

I find that leggings make legs look slightly bigger than tights, so would go for tights, to be honest. Also, there will be no visible waistband (This, of course, depends on how tight the skirt is).

LastTrainToNowhere · 08/12/2009 17:17

Personally I prefer tights under skirts because it doesn't have a waistband. It's murder on my love-handles when two waistbands start chafing! Leggings are strictly for wear under tunics or short dresses.

Agree with 70 denier

LizzyLordsALeaping · 08/12/2009 17:21

A plain black top, not too low cut or tight, just sort of skimming.
Show tits or legs, not both

I personally prefer thick black opaques, 60/70 denier as Fimbo says, Tesco/Asda do some good ones for not much £££'s.

Have a great night!

Fimbo · 08/12/2009 17:22

Sorry I should have made myself clearer, you get "leggings" in the same material as tights. In effect footless tights, places like John Lewis sell them.

I think a plain black vest with perhaps a shrug, little cardigan or even something along these lines.

SmoothCriminal · 08/12/2009 17:23

es long sleeved maybe sligtly baggy knitted top.

Avoid polyester or you will look like a teen in the 90's.

Flat boots thick tights, big hair.

alwayslookingforanswers · 08/12/2009 17:27

no it's yellow and black tartan this one

no worries about 2 waistbands cutting in - it's a size 8 but I had to breathing space

(although DS3 embarrassed me when I took my jeans off to try it on - shouting loud enough for the entire (small) shop to hear

"look BIIIIIG legs"

followed by a repeated

"Mummy are you a girl???"

Will probably go for tights then - help keep my little tootsies warmer as well .

So - got the legs sorted (apart from none of you could sort me an extra 4 or 5 inches on them - oh well )

Just the top

Any links to "suitable" type tops would be really appreciated as I really AM a crap clothes buyer and need all the help I can get

I would go for a long sleeve fitted t shirt in black or black skinny rib polo, keep it nice and simple

SCargot · 08/12/2009 18:06

i d wear leggings as tights

NoSwimmingThanks · 08/12/2009 18:07

Ooh I LOVE that skirt, you will look like a stunner!

alwayslookingforanswers · 08/12/2009 21:11

YY to black skinny rib. Like this from Next

alwayslookingforanswers · 08/12/2009 23:55

LastTrain - your link isn't working for me

OP posts:
alwayslookingforanswers · 08/12/2009 23:58

just looked at the actual listing that I linked to. It's the exact same skirt as mine - only it's for an adult not a child.

God tell me no parent would let their 12yr old wear a skirt like that?? It barely covers your arse!

OP posts:
LastTrainToNowhere · 09/12/2009 10:09

try again

LastTrainToNowhere · 09/12/2009 10:10

Or search for "Asymmetrical Rib Roll Neck" in the the Next website

alwayslookingforanswers · 09/12/2009 10:17

(link still wouldn't work for me)

OP posts:
LizzyLordsALeaping · 09/12/2009 10:17

alwayslookingforanswers · 09/12/2009 10:20

OP posts:
LizzyLordsALeaping · 09/12/2009 10:21

Last one is New Look, some bargains on that page.

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/12/2009 10:54

Agree that wear leggings as tights - I do it all the time - and a black polo neck.

alwayslookingforanswers · 09/12/2009 10:56

ok does it matter whether it's asymetric, ribbed, etc etc - or just black polo??
