Eyeliner - where does it go?!

Where do you put eyeliner under your eyes?! Does it go directly under your bottom lashes (I can't seem to get a straight line close to my eye like this, as my lashes get in the way). Or is it supposed to go above your bottom lashes ie. on the inner rim of your eye - in which case that seems unhygienic as it washes into your eye a bit and last time I tried this it all just washed off anyway.

And are you supposed to put eyeliner on your eyelid too, or just under the eye?

Can't believe I'm 40yo and I don't know how to do make-up

I can only do eyeliner on the bottom lid, I put it in the inner rim and MAC eyeliner stays but other stuff washes out. I think I maybe put it in the wrong place.

I can not get eyeliner on my top lid. Can't get it close enough or straight. I keep meaning to watch a Lauren Luke video on Youtube as she's meant to be very good at showing you what to do.

Shodan · 02/12/2009 11:45

I put mine on just beneath the lashes. Putting it on the inner rim makes me look mean and it itches, too. It helps to have a really soft eyeliner pencil then you can smudge it a bit (if you haven't already in the putting on)to make it softer. Once you've got mascara on it hides any mistakes, I think.

I can't get the hang on liner on the upper lid either- plus, being fair, I think it makes me look odd, somehow.

However, I will fully admit here and now that I'm 41 and have been wearing eyeliner in the same way for two decades, so I'm probably hopelessly out of touch with how it should be done.

Putting it on just beneath the lashes makes your eyes look bigger than putting it on the inner rim. Like Shodan, I smudge mine slightly with my finger to soften it. I can do the top lid, but generally don't- It depends on the look you're going for I suppose. (I'm 34, so also not that 'with it' )

Bodenbabe · 02/12/2009 13:45

You can't do under the lashes it in one straight line, can you? do you all have to do it little dribs and drabs? my lashes just get in the way and stop the pencil from moving.

I do it under the lashes.
It is fiddly, it's just practice, practice, practice.

Ronaldinhio · 02/12/2009 13:51

I don't put it on my lower lid....just the upper lid and then a little at the corner. I use a brush and try to get it very close to the lash line sort of filling in between the lashes too (not as sparse as they sound)
or sometimes a liquid eyeliner

When I'm making an effort I do a smokey eye which often involves the close eyeliner as above but also smudging onto the upper lid and then inner lower lid eyeliner and light smudged eyes shadow under the low lid sometimes also then a bit of false lash action and a liquid liner over th etop of that

sounds like drag queen emoticon

brimfull · 02/12/2009 14:03

doing it under the eye only looks good if you have big eyes imo

Doing it on the upper lid is best with eyeliner brush and using eyeliner gel from bobbi brown or mac - lasts ages

you should lift the upper eyelid and put it on the roots of your upper eyelashes , then do the same on the roots but from the top

finally blend with either flat eyeliner brush or rounded one for a soft look

Have a look on You Tube for videos that will show you how - Lauren Luke is especially good.
But experimentation is the trick, be gentle, don't pull your eyelids, and borgois (sp!?) make a liquid liner pen for about £4, good for practising Sophia Loren cat style eyes!!

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 02/12/2009 14:12

second the bourjois eyeliner, I find the pen fiddly but the liquid one is really good.

I don't put eyeliner on my bottom lashes, it'd make me look quite odd, so I do flicky eyeliner just above my top lashes and in the corner of my eye.

Bodenbabe · 02/12/2009 22:51

Good tip about the YouTube thingy - ta!

I'd never even thought about liquid or gel eyelier, I just presumed it wouod be more fiddly than a pencil. Will definitely give that a go now though!

i only use liquid liner on top lashes, would be too harsh underneath, but it's easiest to get right - if you have a long brush you rest that on the base of your eyelashes and follow round.

but mostly i use pencil, all along top lashes and from halfway to corner under lower lashes (i never line inside, although i have a white liner for doing that it just looks odd to me). i smudge the bottom line, not the top one.

ItsAllaBitNoisy · 02/12/2009 23:22

Smudge it.

I use it on upper and lower lids. Just from the middle out and smudge, it doesn't matter then if it's a bit wobbly.

Also imo, if it's perfectly straight and even on 40 year old eyes, it can be aging. It can look a bit harsh I think. I sharpen the pencil and then gently rub it over with tissue to soften the tip. Practice when you don't have to be anywhere. Dabbing won't work, you need some kind of a soft line to smudge.

(I have almost 40 year old eyes)

great tip about smudging, thanks everybody. I love MN
