Joe Browns - any good or is it for Young People?

I am in the middle of losing weight so am keeping a beady eye out for cheap and cheerful clothes as I whistle down the sizes.... ha,ha,ha.

Anyway - a catalogue for Joe Browns arrived this morning for a previous resident so I opened it. A lot of it is very ruffly, bordering on Per Una, and a lot of it is scarily 100% polyester. But there were some tunics and layering T's and other bits that looked like they might be OK for some cheap and cheerful jollity.

Anyone ever bought from them? Is is cheap and nasty and will fall apart in seconds or will I look just dreadful and mutton/lambesque?

I've only just bought some stuff from them and so far i love it.
However, you do have to be careful to avoid the odd items!!

I'm 34 & lost lots of weight after DC2 (back to pre-pg weight yey) and got fed up with cheapo t-shirts that went wonky.
SO far i've bought some shirts (blouses?), a cami and some tunics, love everything

snowmummy · 26/11/2009 19:27

I've got a dress from there that I wear over jeans, and a knit tunic. They are both great for the money. I also ordered some jeans which were lovely but unfortunately too short for me.

OrmIrian · 26/11/2009 19:29

Good quality but yes, for the younger person generally I think. DH has bought some stuff from there but the woman's stuff is for mere chits . But I am v old so I may not be their target demographic

bruffin · 26/11/2009 19:47

I have bought a few Joe Brown bits from FASHION WORLD which doesn't really cater for chits. Quality seems fine

CMOTdibbler · 26/11/2009 19:53

I've got a nice dress from there (actually, to me its more tunic length so only wear with leggings or 100 denier tights) and it's good quality and looks good.
I am not a young chit

AvadaKedavra · 26/11/2009 19:55

The sizes are huge with big long arms, but other than that I love them

deepdarkwood · 26/11/2009 19:57

Have a couple of (plainer) dresses from there, which I've liked and been quite impressed with quality wise. Better for blokes though, imo

DuchessOfAvon · 26/11/2009 20:01

Oh I am getting quite excited now. I may venture into a purchase.

I am not a young chit and am not sure what body shape is emerging as the flab receeds so I feel a bit nervous about some different shapes and colours.

Thanks for your help.

i think they are for people who are youngish, but not so young they still go shopping (rather than being sat on their btms with kids, whilst online shopping in order to avoid hving to grag items out of their DCs hands whilst attempting to asess whther or not to buy.)

so ..less than retirement..more than university...

i think some of their stuff is quite nice, i got my brother a jumper from them and it has lasted and washed very well, looked good.

some of their stuff in crinkly finish i reckon would not do so well though. some is a bit what my mother calls 'shop girl'

but i would deffo buy again, finding sth i like.

OrmIrian · 26/11/2009 21:07

Have to admit they have some very very pretty things. But most of them seem to be high-waisted and that makes me look like a whale in a doily. And the trousers are very short.

EdgarAllenPoo · 26/11/2009 21:11

the other thing is if you don't really want an item from them, it is likely they'll reduce it in the next edition (from one outlet..they really sell everywhere ebay..amazon...own web site etc..)

BendyBob · 26/11/2009 21:16

This is interesting. I too have been looking at JB's clothes.

I really like some of the tunics/dresses. But then they also have lots of surfey looking stuff and I was worried I was too old for it.

But I like it. It reminds me of the sort of things I wore when I was younger (back in 1862 )

DuchessOfAvon · 27/11/2009 08:14

So they seem to have an odd block then - huge sizes, long arms, short legs and a high waist?

I ordered a lovely black knitted dress from them last year, it said size 8 but it was MASSIVE and it had to go back, twas very nice though. Also have a pair of biker boots which was pleased with but haven't worked up the guts to wear them yet!

tegan · 27/11/2009 09:32

Dh buys all his clothes from jacamo and alot of that is joe brown, it is really good quality and the womens stuff is lovely and washes well

itsmeolord · 27/11/2009 09:40

Ihave the owl dress and the roses dress from joe browns and love them.

They are great for layering things and funk tunics/tops.

Quality is generally very good.

It was the owl dress that drew my eye. I need a tunic that will encompass my hips and I don't know how narrowly it is cut. But the larger size thing may be my saving.

there are dresses very much like that owl one on ebay too (from thailand though!) if you want a variation on the style in the same print.

BonjourIvresse · 27/11/2009 13:03

I'm not keen. I did like the owl dress but I don't do polyester. It all seems to be polyester

EdgarAllenPoo · 27/11/2009 13:18

such as this for one....

or this one

actually there are ^loads of colours and styles from this vendor 'sundryitem'

EldonAve · 27/11/2009 13:25

my mate wears loads of their stuff

they don't do free returns so I've not tried them

teameric · 27/11/2009 13:28

Oh I so want that owl dress!

BonjourIvresse · 27/11/2009 14:08

I love the ebay owl dresses but I'm worried that they will come up small....has anyone bought one?

EdgarAllenPoo · 27/11/2009 14:59

how about this must-have Christmas item??

no i haven't bought one, but they put the actual measurements in the listing for a guide. looks like they accept returns except you have to pay shipping (and to Thailand that wouldn't be worth doing)
