how do you store your makeup?

my makeup has never had a proper home. until recently it lived in a random assortment of places, mainly a too-small box in the bathroom cupboard that i could never find anything in and kept knocking over and breaking all my eyeshadows

as of today it has a proper home it is soooooo glam, it's all together, i can take it to wherever the best light is and i can see everything!

so this is partly a thread, and partly asking what do you do with yours? i hadn't realised until i recently started looking that there are proper toolbox type cases designed for storing slap - anyone super-organised got one of those? i hardly use any but seem to own a fair bit - how much space does yours take up?

I have a vanity case which is red - about the same size as yours. Used to live in a collection of small bags or a huge basket type thing. I was amazed that mine all fitted into that case!

lizandlulu · 23/11/2009 21:35

i have one of those toolbox type ones, i too harldy wear any but have an obsession with owning pretty things and have loads!! [it makes me happy)

I used to have a vanity case but didn't like it as it got dusty quickly and also everything rattled around and was disordered in it. I now have a set of those perspex drawers from Muji - could do with a second one tbh.

AngelinaJolly · 23/11/2009 21:55

I have a drawer for stuff that I don't use much and a teeny makeup bag for things I use more frequently.
I am fastidious about chucking out colours that don't quite work and old stuff even if it is Chanel blah blah.
And I've learnt to be super choosy ito product/ brand/ colour etc resulting in less clutter.

Love your case HoG

heartofgold · 23/11/2009 21:57

ooh i say lizandlulu terrifyingly organised

i wonder how much it reflects our personality. perspex drawers sounds very practical and grown up as opposed to my romantic option

Dp is Mr Minimalist and has worked hard to suppress my romantic tendencies (or clutter junkiness as he would call it)!

Really I yearn for vanity cases and those gorgeous big leather jewellery boxes.

pookabelle · 23/11/2009 21:59

I store mine in a Benefit vanity case which I was very pleased to purchase for £2 in the January sales a couple of years ago in Boots as the contents were missing and no-one knew how much it should be. Later on saw it for sale for about £28 at a Benefit counter.

heartofgold · 23/11/2009 22:00

i never throw stuff out. i have makeup that's almost as old as the case

when i bought a new mascara last year the old one was at least six years old. which demonstrates how little i actually use!

DanDruff · 23/11/2009 22:01

i stuff seaosnal make up away.
the rest in a pencil pot ( pencils) and in a bag

DanDruff · 23/11/2009 22:01

that bag wont last a year i reckon
you need a washable one

heartofgold · 23/11/2009 22:02

seasonal makeup?

AngelinaJolly · 23/11/2009 22:06

HoG- the best thing about having a good clearout is finding a perfect thing to replace gunky old stuff.

heartofgold · 23/11/2009 22:14

what proportion of different kinds of makeup do you all have then?

i have mostly nail varnishes - every colour (have their own bag) - and sparkly eyeshadows - mainly green, brown and gold (green eyes). loads of eyeliners for some reason. i own no foundation and only one lipstick

OP posts:
frakkinaround · 23/11/2009 22:39

I have 2 foundations, 4 concealers, 3 compact powders, 1 loose powder, 1 shimmery sparkly powder, 2 bronzers, 7 blushers, tooooooooooo many eyeshadows, too many eyeliners, a handful of mascaras and lots and lots of lipsticks (and only about 5 nail varnishes).

I had a good clearout lately, which is why i know what's left. Although I hate throwing away make up that I've worn once and decided it doesn't suit me because someone must want it somewhere.

heartofgold · 23/11/2009 23:00

am boggling at four concealers - why??

OP posts:
frakkinaround · 23/11/2009 23:05

1 duo for under-eye, 1 liquid heavy duty for nasty blemishes, 1 cream concealer stick and 1 for when I'm tanned!

MrsMorgan · 23/11/2009 23:06

I have a case in the bathroom for the stuff I use all the tme and then the rest is in one drawer of my chest of drawers, vaguely sorted into old plastic take away containers lol.

monkeysmama · 23/11/2009 23:09

I store mine in 8 big make up bags by product (1bag of blushers (took me 15 odd to find a good one & still not perfect), eye pencils etc. in a big box in big bathroom cupboard.

I have a makeup bag of stuff I wear everyday.

frakkinaround · 23/11/2009 23:10

I used to store mine by product but it's much more satisfying to have a big case to root through!

zippy539 · 23/11/2009 23:11

When I worked in the theatre (daarling) we all used proper toolboxes (or rather plastic B&Q versions) and they were brilliant. The whole thing folded out when you opened up the lid and you could put fiddly stuff at the top and big stuff in the space at the bottom.

I've never found anything so good for storing slap and I'm sure there must be fancier versions on the market.

displayuntilbestbefore · 23/11/2009 23:12

keep all mine in a bag I was given by SIL - don't have much makeup really.
Keep nail varnish (for pretty summer toes) in the fridge

frakkinaround · 23/11/2009 23:19

There are zippy. Big St Tropez toolboxes. I want one....but they're not terribly practical to transport.

heartofgold · 23/11/2009 23:35

my fridge is too full of polaroid film to fit in nail varnish as well, we'd have to hang the milk in a carrier bag out the window like when we were students does that help it keep then?

OP posts:
heartofgold · 23/11/2009 23:36

(hog is now pondering a dedicated film and slap fridge in her spare room...)

OP posts:
displayuntilbestbefore · 23/11/2009 23:48

your fridge sounds similar to ours - the whole door section is full of camera film, one old nail varnish (tbh I don't even know if it's any good anymore but pinched idea of keeping it fridge from a Swedish friend of mine!) and if they're lucky, the milk cartons get a look in at the bottom!
go for the extra fridge in your spare room - make sure you leave enough space for a bit of bubbly too
