Bodywarmers/ Gilets, yes or no?

I own a couple of lovely casual skirts (on the knee, gentle A-line, babycord, look great with calf boots) but I never manage to wear them when the weather gets cold because I can't find the right kind of coat/ jacket to put over the top. My coats are the wrong length and too bulky, while a blazer style jacket looks plain daft.

I have always been opposed in principle to what now seem to be called gilets (when did that happen?) but am now wondering whether that is what I need to pair with these skirts- warmth without the shapelessness/ two hemlines problems. Am I delusional? Is the concept of a sleeveless duvet now sartorially acceptable? Will my arms be warm enough? Or if not, what the heck should wear with my skirts?
