I have had short hair for years, and in fact feel very feminine when it is short! A pixie cut can be very girly but you also have to be careful that it suits you.

I find the major difference between short and long hair is that the haircut really, really matters - you have got to get someone good at cutting short hair and good at advising you about what suits your face. A bad short haircut is disastrous because the only way to correct it is to grow out or get it cut even shorter. So if you are going to take the plunge go to someone really good!

I am now growing it out but it is just for a change, and I don't feel any more feminine!

Have you ever had short hair before? You need to be careful IME, if you go too drastic too suddenly you might end up really regretting it. I personally never feel right with shorter hair, and it's never been shorter than just above shoulder length. I always end up feeling really miserable until it grows long enough to 'swish'. You may well love shorter hair, it looks great on some people - but proceed with caution I say!

pics of mine on profile - I'm very girly

OOh be careful! I did this about 18mths ago, loved for a few hours, then really regretted it, it took me the best part of a year to like my hair again.

There were 2 main problems

  1. It was a really bad cut, I should have known better than to go to Toni & Guy.
  1. I got bored with it quickly as I couldn't DO anything with it IYKWIM.

I now have it in a choppy bob with side swept fringe. It's just long enough to tie back, I can change the parting, have fringe or no fringe, etc so lots of options. I also cut it myself now as I don't think I'll ever trust a hairdresser again!

If you decide to go for it, go to a really good hairdresser, and go short gradually so it's not so hard to grow back if you don't like it.

Sorry to be so negative!

Is your hair naturally curly then?

I had my hair short once and it looked fab when I left the salon - all straightened and styled but when curly it looked stupid and I hated it. This was before GHDs etc so it was hard to straighten myself.

If you want to do it go to a very very good salon so you get a great cut that suits you and you can style easily.

I agree with others, short hair can look fab but is more dependent on a good cut and the shape being right for your face. I've had short hair once and it was a disaster but I put that down to a) bad cut and b) my non-elfin features. If you're going to do it I'd make sure you go to a hairdresser who really knows what they are doing!

I had curly hair short this time last year and everybody told me it was lovely. I have grown it a bit longer for now, but I will go short again next time I fancy a change.

I liked the drama (!) of doing something not just a bit different but very different.

MaggiePie · 17/11/2009 18:01

I agree with verity. Toni and guy just try to give everybody the same haircut. They make no allowance for different hair types. They made me feel like i was being awkward for having thick curly hair.

i found a man who looks like a hermit who does a great cut.

mathanxiety · 17/11/2009 18:11

Sometimes a real barber will take the time to listen and give you a nice short cut that flatters you. With a short cut, it's important to suit the style to the face shape and size. If your hair is curly, do you have a strategy for when it starts to grow again?

I had a really short haircut by student a vidal sassoon years ago. It was cut well, but just didn't suit. I decided it was lack of elfin features (eg I'm not Zoe Wanamaker) and my short neck (this makes a difference). Just looked blokey (DH not impressed).
