Rubbish at Curling my Hair so should I - eek! - HAVE IT PERMED??

In a real hair rut at the mo. I have a round face and at present long thick straightist hair. I love having it curled at the hairdressers ( she uses straightening irons and I am absolutely rubbish at this at home). I suppose the style I like can best be described at soft waves/sprially/very soft ringlets which start at about jaw length. Would a perm or body wave be able to copy this or should I head for the curling tongs and hours of faffing about infront of the mirror? PS before I even thought about the idea of a perm/body wave (quite scary really!) I requested a Babyliss Curling Wand for xmas from my ILs - wonder if this will give me desired results?

i used to go into the salon (in the 80s when perms were de-rigeur) and asked to look like one of the charlies angels (can't remember which one now, but the long, curly brunette one).Used to come out looking like a shaggy dog.

My own fears precisely. Maybe I'll stick to the curling wand and/or forking out for an expert to do it.
