Why does the fashion crowd insist on using the singular for specific (ahem) "pieces"?

Have been trying to ignore the trend in the last year or so for fashion journos to refer to "a boot" "a trouser" "a jean" etc etc.

Perusing Observer Woman magazine today and have finally lost the plot on this approach. To refer to oneself as wearing "a black tight" is one singular too far.

Even if you are Kate Moss.

WTF???

LOL

Not the last year or so, and not just the fash mag pack

Back when I was a shop dolly Down Under, a good 15 years ago, we referred to all pieces singularly

One of something = unique = desirable

You lust and pant after a lovely pant. But a pair of pants is pants.

The models are so skinny they only need half the garment...
