Has anyone had their hair chemically straightened or done the Yuko thing?

I'm just sick of my hair always looking frizzy and rubbish. I'm useless with a hair dryer (always ends up looking puffy and worse) and I don't like using GHDs all the time.

I don't particularly want poker straight hair, just lovely swishy non-frizzy hair.

Is chemical straightening as bad for your hair as it sounds? Does it cost a fortune? Does it take hours to do?

Hi I had mine chemically straightened and it was not worth it at all. I still had to use straighteners though not as much as before. Mine didnt cost anywhere near that much though - about £60 so maybe I didnt have the same thing as above?
My hair is curly (not tight curls) and very thick. Why do we always want the opposite? lol

Even £250 sounds quite cheap. I paid £320 for mine to be done, have had it done 3/4 times now and it is worth every penny. Most places charge according to the length of your hair and mine is just below shoulder length.

Yuko doesn't damage your hair at all, in fact mine is softer and shinier and looks much better with a yuko treatment than without.

Ooh, notjustapuppy it sounds lovely. Now I'm tempted. So about £300 and several hours of boredom? Does it last a while?

Did you get it done in London? How do I find out a good place to get it done. Any recommendations?

What is this Yuko you speak of? Sounds interesting.

When I was a teenager, I was so embarrassed having wavy hair that I straightened it myself with a £3 Toni perm kit. Ie, followed the pack instructions but used it on my hair wet and straight not on rollers.

It worked ok but that was the 80's when appalling, over processed hair was the norm! I wouldn't dare try it now.

I've got short hair but it's still annoying and frizzy. Would love a permanent solution, short of a visit from Madame Guillotine

I have had mine done annually for about 6 years now, similar to yuko system, called liscio. I love it, have v frizzy hair and its a godsend. Used to have it done in a salon in golders green london, however the owner emigrated to japan, and he ships the products to his assistant who works from home so I pay £150 for just above shoulder lenght hair.

If you live near maidenhead I can forward you details for someone 3 friends use, this lady uses yuko and has a salon type room in back garden and 2 ppl work on your hair so takes about 3 - 3.5 hours. my friends paid £180ish (depends on length)

I had mine done the first time at the original Yuko salon near Mayfair and the more recent times at a salon locally who have trained at the one in Mayfair.

On my hair it last a good 6 months looking fab, then have to start using straighteners again for the top bits but can stretch it out to 9 - 12 months between treatments.

It is a very boring 4 hours though - always get achey shoulders but totally worth it.

Only other downside is that you then can't wash your hair for 48 hours or even tie it up/tuck it behind ears so I always pick a couple of days when I don't need to leave the house and can sit looking a complete mess!

another option is the so-called Brazilian blow dry, which costs about £200 in London and can be done on coloured hair. It is brilliant but it only lasts about two months on my hair though.
I love the sound of Yuko but i have highlights. The thing about Yuko is that it can't be done on hair that has been highlighted or coloured at all, right?

actually they bought out a new yuko treatment a couple of years ago that can be used on highlighted or coloured hair...not had that one personally but you could ring and ask.

I would avoid the brazilian blow dry at all costs - it uses vast quantities of formaldehyde which is very bad for you.

My friend had hers done and it looked awful.
It made her hair look like very long pubes.

I had Yuko at Errol Douglas salon in London. Cost about 400 I think - my hair was just above my bra strap at the time.

Was fab - had it done another couple of times when Ioved to New York but it was never as good as the when it was done in London.

I used to spend 40 quid a week getting my hair blow dried so got my money back in no time.

tiredemma you sure it was yuko your friend had done? I know tons of people that have had it and never heard a bad word against it. But I know there are similar things that are bad that can often be confused if you don't research properly. Also important to go to a proper yuko salon as it's specialised and there is a risk of hair snapping off if it's not done right.

kissmummy my yuko-ist told me that it's basically not quite as strong as the original yuko treatment and I think she said it's a cream treatment rather than a gel.

That's interesting kissmummy. I've been obsessively researching this since I've decided drastic action is needed to make my hair presentable and I'd come to the conclusion that the Brazilian or permanent blow dry was the way forward. I was going to book myself in next week. I'm a bit scared by what notjustapuppymum says though

Has anyone else had it done? I've found a salon near my work that does it for £150. I reckon it would be worth if it lasted 3-4 months (which is what it says on the website) but not if it's only 2 months.

3 of my friends have been there in the last six months with excellent results and all pleased. I will be getting mine done, prob next month (if I get the dosh together!)

Hair doesn't have to be curly, mine just frizzy and very thick, with a few kinks to add to the mix! So I have really benefitted from having it done, anyone who has known me for years have told me I look so much better now. Obviously I didn't before, lol.

Also yuko can be used on coloured hair, my hair went grey when I was 14 and has been dyed ever since. You have to leave at least 2 weeks between colouring and yuko for it not to damage hair.
