Do you turn up your jeans ot get them shortened?

I am about a 30 " leg- so most jeans are too long. If I get petite ones they are too tight round bum etc.
I have just got the Boden straight legs and they are about an inch too long -maybe more.
Is it worth paying to have them shortened- and do they look okay if they are- matching thread etc- ot do you just turn them up? Will be wearing with chinky flat biker boots- over boots mainly.

Hi i have exactly the same problem I've only just started taking mine to a tailor and i am wondering why i didnt do it sooner!

I have found that turning them up doesnt last long and i'm forever fixing them.
if you want to get them shortened i would recommend wearing the shoes you want and trying on the trousers at the tailors so they can measure the length precisely.

you cant even tell that the trousers have been turned up so long as the thread matches.

I paid a local woman £7.50 to have my jeans shortened. Worth every penny IMO.

wash them first - jeans shrink!

i turn them up keeping the original hems. it's hard to describe but a piece of piss to do, just machine a kind of pleat all around, very close to the original hemline. no need for matching thread and it keeps all the faded bits you get on hems, looks better than rehemming imho. only works if you have about an inch or so to lose though, not much more.

I bought a very expensive pair of jeans last year and had them shortened professionally. They were great, despite my being a bit dubious about it ruining the shape.

Have now lost weight and they look crap on me.

Oh well.

I have taken up jeans. It is very easy to do and if you rub the hems with sandpaper afterwards you get the worn look.

I had thought about doing it myself but was worried that a) the hems might pucker if I didn't get the tension right on the machine and b) getting the right colour thread. and c) would my sewing machine cope with 2 thicknesses of denim?
There is no way I would just turn them under andlose the thread along the hems.

when you take them to be shortened do you just use a dry cleaners type of alteration service?

I'm a shorty and have always had jeans turned up professionally. I've always had the tailor pin them - one of the main reasons imo for going. wash and iron them first. take a belt if you plan on wearing them with one. and take the right shoes with you.

They do it for you for free in the shops here (take a trip to France!).

Definitely worth it IMO.

Works a dream! Try and find a tailors/alterations shop that has a fitting room and ask them to advise you first then they can give you their expert opinion on what needs doing to achieve the desired result. If they are slim/skinny fit getting them tapered works too as they rest on top of your foot rather than sliding underneath, without looking like they're too short.

Have a pair of jeans though at the moment which need doing, and I keep forgetting.

I shorten my jeans myself, hand sewing them.

I had them done through the shop I bought thm in. The shop assistant pins them up when you try them on and they go off to be altered and the shop ring when they're done. The beauty of independent shops!
