Jeans...what did we wear before jeans hit the uk?

Jeans were a 70's thing and nobody inthe uk wore them before this. What did we used to wear instead?

I HATE jeans, they bore me rigid. WHY oh WHY have they become a safe uniform to so many people?

I had my first jeans at 6, so that would be 1973.
Before that I think I just wore dresses with horrid itchy tights.
