I don't think so
I got a watch off mine, but it was a close call between ring and watch iirc

pushmepullyou · 20/09/2009 20:57

I got an opal ring from mine for my 18th. I loved it, until I lost it at uni.

LetThemEatCake · 20/09/2009 20:58

I got a ring from mine for my 21st. Still wear it.

crokky · 20/09/2009 20:59

No, it's a nice present if she like rings.

Mimi1977 · 20/09/2009 21:00

Not at all - a lovely present. If you got it from a boyfriend at 18 chances are you'd break up and never want to wear it again! Much better to get it from your parents!

FiveGoMadonTheDanceFloor · 20/09/2009 21:00

No

brimfull · 20/09/2009 21:00

My granny gave me a ring for my 18th, and I loved it. I still have it now.

Hassled · 20/09/2009 21:02

No. DD got a lovely antique sapphire ring for her 18th. She hsan't lost it yet. It's the sort of present she'll still have when she's 80 and thinks fondly about being 18 - go for it.

brimfull · 20/09/2009 21:03

hassled-would love to give her antique one.

I got a beautiful ring from my Dad for my 21st Birthday, i was chuffed, so no i think you will be fine.

As Ms Average is 11 years away from marriage and unlikely to afford her own, I think it's great idea. I got one for my 18th and we all still agree that it was much better gift than the lifetime membership of the National Trust that my best friend got..

brimfull · 20/09/2009 21:12

god national trust membership -that's cruel

My God, national trust membership? 'You're an adult now - settle down to enjoying a nice stroll round the garden'?

I got a locket for my 18th and also now have the aquamarine necklace my mother got for her 18th. I think jewellery is a lovely present from your parents.

SkaterGrrrrl · 21/09/2009 15:24

I had a ring for 18th, an antique gold band. I wore it every day until 2 yrs ago when pregnancy meant my fingers outgrew it . lovely present

NewbeeMummy · 21/09/2009 15:36

Not at all, I think it makes a fantastic present. Both my sister and I were given lovely rings for our 18th's and many years down the line we both still have them and wear them frequently.

ilovesprouts · 21/09/2009 15:39

brimfull · 21/09/2009 18:53
