been reading on another thread most mumsnetters think false nails are vile.

what do you think to french manicures on natural, not false nails?

OP posts:
ginnny · 02/09/2009 20:34

I think it looks lovely on real nails.

Not the fake 'square' looking ones though - that's just chavvy!

CMOTdibbler · 02/09/2009 20:35

If they are not too blingy (ie not white tips and clear, but pink over the top to calm it down) then I think they can look nice

CarrieDababi · 02/09/2009 20:35

yes i do mean real nails

OP posts:
CybilLiberty · 02/09/2009 20:36

Hmm. I don't like them really. It's the white tips.

DunderMifflin · 02/09/2009 20:37

I agree with ginny and CMOTdibbler...

Tortington · 02/09/2009 20:37

i bite them off - had it done once

waswte of time

CarrieDababi · 02/09/2009 20:38

you bite them off? what the nails or the polish?

OP posts:
Tortington · 03/09/2009 02:02

i had acrylcs put on;

i know - i know it was painful but i couldnt stop myself

sticking with the 5.99 ones from boots

franklymydear · 03/09/2009 04:32

I like french manicures to be slightly pinky to tone down the white tips but it is the only treatment I like on fingernails - block colours look old to me and don't get me started on jewels and flowers

Nails to be round not square and not overly long

and never, no never, to have a french manicure on toe-nails that is just gross

thems the rules

pasturesnew · 03/09/2009 05:04

I like an "American" nail and actually franklymydear I think this might be what you like too, a "French" nail has pink or clear base, a bright white tip and clear overcoat but an "American" nail has a pink overcoat so that stops the white tip being quite so fluorescent in UV light.

Agree that french manicure on toes is wrong.

CarrieDababi · 03/09/2009 08:33

you bit off the acrylics nails!

oh phew looks i'm ok then,
as thats what i do only on the fingers not overly long, pink over the top.
never the toes, agree that is gross.

mind you i did used to like "nail art"

i like it because it looks groomed and polish and neutral.
plus i use a base coaat of sally hanson hard as nails and they don't break.

Hmm I'm not sure, I swap between chavvy and classy.
I think it depends on whether the person is generally well groomed, then it doesn't look out of place iyswim,

Sometimes it can jar with the rest of the appearance of the person, does that make sense?

At the moment I prefer clean, manicured nails with a slick of gloss. The thing with French tips is you can't always tell if the nails are clean

badgermonkey · 03/09/2009 09:01

Whenever I've managed to grow my nails I French manicure them (or, as pasturesnew says, American manicure) and it always looks lovely IMO. Just like normal nails but nicer and cleaner and shinier! Doesn't last long on me though.

Karam · 03/09/2009 20:39

On normal nails, okay (if pink) on false nails... just no!

civilfawlty · 03/09/2009 20:41

footballers wives.

hester · 03/09/2009 21:07

I think it's a bit naff and dated. It's the white tip that bothers me.

But the real horror is definitely french manicured toenails; long ones.... (shudder)

LetThemEatCake · 03/09/2009 21:08

I had a pedicure tonight ... OPI's "you make me Vroom"

my feet look so lovely, I have to say!

serant · 03/09/2009 21:17

Natural nails are beautiful, clean, file & buff.. perfect

same on toes, def short nails though.

LetThemEatCake · 03/09/2009 21:20

SHORT SHORT SHORT, all the way.

I asked the pedicurist (??) to re-do the length tonight, she'd left them with a bit too much white for my liking....

MrsSeanBean · 03/09/2009 22:36

Even a natural French manicure seems to have a whiff of WAG about it nowadays. IMO better to stick to a clear shine, Chanel Reflet Immediat in clear is lovely.
