What to consider when buying a wedding ring

The wedding is less than 2 months away so I better get going.

My engagement ring is a chunky (6mm wide) silver ring with a baguette cut topaz, so I know that my options are limited to something narrowish and silver, too as I don't want one ring to destroy the other.

I found this one on the internet and it has everything I want lookswise, but I'm not sure whether there's anything else I need to consider? The price is great for our budget, but there must be a reason why diamond jewellery is usually much more expensive, surely?

Can you see any catches? I want something I can wear the rest of my life, and whilst I'm not into expensive jewellery I don't want it to look cheap either.

The reason it's reasonably priced is that it's a teeny weeny little diamond - the entire ring is 3mm wide, for comparison my 1/4ct diamond in my engagement ring is 4mm in diameter.

It might look a bit out of proportion with a wider engagement ring, but probably not. You're right about getting the same metal for both rings ... would you wear it on its own at all? That's the one thing I regret slightly about my wedding ring, that it's shaped to match my engagement ring and looks stupid by itself, when I would sometimes like to wear it by itself. Personally though I think this one would look good on its own.

I'm not planning on wearing it on it's own, no. I love my engagement ring too much.

It looks a bit like this only with a topaz and the stone being the entire width of the ring, no metal at the sides, iykwim.

My alternative would be no stone at all, but this using the wedding date as a basis for the code.

I hate decisions.

If you are planning to wear them together then I think you need to go and try something on as it's hard. I would be very careful about two rings next to each other with single stones - it could work, but you'd have to be certain.

If you want stones in the band, multiple small ones would probably fit easier against the single stone in your engagment ring?

I would go for a plain silver wedding band myself and leave the topaz to be the star (iyswim)

I'd look for a topaz eternity ring style, something like this

If you get it fairly narrow, it would complement the engagement ring without overpowering it. Another single stone isn't going to work.

Very good points made about two stones sitting together. I've tried several rings on to try for width, hence I know 3 and 4 mm would work, but they were all way out of my price range.

I thought I'd need to go for a stone so the topaz wouldn't look out of place, but the more I think about it, I think you're right, about it being 'the star'.

The topaz sounds lovely and more than able to be the "star". If you wanted the band to be more "interesting" something that's engraved as you suggested earlier I think would be fine.

You could also consider two very narrow bands - one on either side of your engagement ring?

Hmm, two bands, that'd be another option, but then it would look less like a wedding ring, wouldn't it?

Plenty of things to think about. I shall report back when I made a decision.

The nice chap in Tiffany told me when I bought my wedding ring that it's better to have a contrast between the two rings.

My engagement ring is a thin sort of ridged band and by wedding ring is a thicker plain rounded band, they look really nice together. I tried on the wedding ring that 'matched' my engagement ring and they didn't look very good together.

I have a white gold and sapphire engagement ring, all in all it's about a centimetre wide but the ends of the ring are joined with the sapphire and it's asymetric so it's smaller than that descrption makes it sound. My wedding ring will be 1mm textured rose gold and the contrast is beautiful.

I've informed DH2B I want a very thin Bvlgari full eternity ring to complement my wedding ring for on top of my engagement ring.

I tried white gold wedding rings but it looked like a I had a finger coated in metal.

My engagement ring is similar to yours in style, but with a diamond and in rose gold. I had a ring made especially to match, it's a white gold band with a thinner, matching, rose gold band on top.

Do you have any independant jewellers near you? We found them surprisingly cheap for such a personalised service.

IMHO a wedding is traditonally a plain band so, therefore a chunky silver band would compliment your engagement ring very well.

Slug - I've searched all day today and actually found a small jeweller in town who thinks he can help us within the required lead time and budget and make us something bespoke. I never thought it'd be possible, now I'm really excited. The bloke and I will go and talk things through with him on Saturday.

I had my wedding ring cut to fit around my engagement ring.

I think you need to try a wedding ring on to get an idea as you often end up with something different from what you imagined.

Dontcallmebaby You could always twist the cut part of your wedding ring to the back so it doesn't show.
