"walk to school" hat ... any suggestions?

I really hate walking to school when it rains because my hair goes really curly and frizzy. I know it sounds pathetic, but I have rubbish hair, and so it only ever looks nice when it's been styled/straightened. So bascially if it rains, then I drive the mile to school that I really should be walking. So I think the answer is some kind of headgear. Can anyone find me a good hat to wear? Can't do the tight, pull-on woolly ones as they make me look like the village idiot. Also not keen on "country walks" wax-type ones. Am I searching for something that doesn't exist? All suggestions much appreciated

THIS is what you need. Friend of mine has one from the States - have always fancied one myself. Dunno if you can get them here.

Walk to school hat is the winter equivalent of school run dress.

Kangol and Barbour are good makes to look out for. They generally have some nice brimmed hats in wool and/or waxed fabric, which do the job and look good. I know you said not waxed, but I have a hat which is a combination of wool, waxed cotton, and fleece - nothing like the country walks style.

Another make is Tilley. (I have one, and it is worth every penny.)

I wear a brimmed hat all year round, in all weathers. Far better than a hood in the rain.

yes you always think a hood's going to be a good idea, then it's just a pain isn't it?

Had another thought: garden centres. The ones round here have glothing depts and often carry quite a range of hats.

Tilley. I've got their women's hemp hat. It's a summer hat, but pretty water-resistant. Only the heaviest rain gets through.

I have several Walk-To-School-Hats mainly in this style in different colours.

They are not waxed or anything, but have never had wet hair even in heavier rain.

Am suffering from ante natal misery but looking at these hats has made me LOL

and so much easier than a brolly - especially when pushing a buggy or holding toddlers hand while carrying bags etc.

love the sites you have linked to - will be getting a collection for the winter as moving house so nearer pre-school etc so no need to take the car so often - hip hip hooray!!!

MdmLindt, I have one like that, it's great as I can stuff arrange my unwashed mop carefully coiffed tresses inside the hat, well out of eyesight the wind and rain.

I don't get it - in all those pics, the hair is tumbling down under the hat, so what use is that for keeping it dry. Do you all have really short hair? How on earth would you keep it all within the hat otherwise?

I have similar, though fleece-lined

If it is only a shower I let the ends of my hair get wet (tis a few inches past shoulders)
if it is pouring I tuck hair into upturned collar of raincoat

I just received (about half an hour ago) a Boden rain hat in the green check. And it is very very stylish.

Looks silly without a coat though, but with a coat looks really cool.

Who was it here that bought their own hat in TK Maxx? Don't know whether it's a good idea to ask her for advice or not

I let the bottom of my hair get wet, a la MrsB. If it is really bucketing, just stuff it under the hat. Really depends on how long your hair and how snug the hat.

I just bought a new hat on Saturday. DH noted that I already have one the same, but in grey. What does he know. One cannot have too many hats.

Still struggling to find one... trouble is, if it's wet I usually wear a black Berghaus jacket; not particuarly stylish but keeps me very warm and dry. Think the problem is finding something that goes with it. Beginnning to think that being stylish isn't really an option!
