Ok, I have got to grips with the dress over leggings malarkey.. but what happens in the winter?

what happens with leggings in the winter? do you have to wear boots over them? obviously if you wear shoes you have a bare foot and ankle and you can't wear socks, can you?? what boots do you wear?

I wear either cowboy boots or little flat ankle boots. I do still wear them with high shoes (shoe boot type stle) for work and going out though.
