Smart

I meant to ask about this since the weekend! I went to a fairly posh do for which the dress code was described as smart. For men this appeared to translate as wearing a suit, blazer-ish or double breasted sort of thing.

I was given a dress about 3 years ago that I wanted to wear and that got me out of having to buy a new one. However, this was floor length rather than mid calf length. I figured that if maxi dresses were in fashion at the moment, then maybe I could wear a longer dress to a slightly less formal occasion.

But no one else did!

So was this a major faux pas? (I did get compliments on the dress though!)

I wouldn't say so and if you got compliments it must have been a lovely dress Be pleased with yourself I say

I would have interpreted smart as mid calf length, knee length or trousers, but I don't think you committed a major faux pas, unless you turned up in a tiara and a fur stole as well...
