Non-black funeral wear

I am going to a funeral next Friday. It has been specified that the family will not be wearing black and that there is no need for me to.

I have dropped a dress size or two in the last six months and literally have nothing to wear. I am a very casual dresser normally - jeans, cropped cargo type trousers, t-shirts etc and none of my old work and therefore smarter clothes fit any more.

Any suggestions on what to wear? I was thinking maybe some linen trousers, but I'm on the train for 3 hours getting there so would end up a wrinkled mess.

After some excellent advice I received on here when I had no idea what to wear to a ceilidh I thought I'd ask again.

Could you wear something else on the train and change into linen trousers when you are about to arrive?

Generally I'd say wear what you'd wear to a job interview, but that's difficult in your case if you don't have anything in that category that fits you.

smart and muted, not much flesh on show. knee length skirt, arms covered. or trousers with high neck top and sleeveless (but something to cover you for ceremony)

A dress sounds good, but where do I look for one?

I have large calves so can't do below the knee - is above the knee a no-no for a funeral...it feels it to me. Maxi maybe? Who can carry off maxi dresses?

Def not a maxi dress to a funeral. Just above the knee skirt will be fine.

What size/shape are you ? Preferred colours ?

I'll have to buy something new. Entire outfit I think. I've been SAHM ever since losing weight so my wardrobe is completely casual.

Knee length skirt sounds ok too - would that work with flats? I have some traipsing across London to do so want to avoid heels I think.

Kew have some nice dark coloured dresses which can be worn modestly.

I'm a 12. Heavy on the thigh (hence name!) and hips, light on the norkage so a definite pear. And like I say, chunky of calf.

you could do above knee no prob. unless there is someone who will be offended but if they are asking for no black it doesn't seem likely.

buy a new dress, obviously. and if the idea is non black, then go for bright colours.

OK - so I am going to buy a new dress. That seems to be the order of the day. On the knee or slightly above. Colourful.

So where to look?

Budget around £40. Have got time to order online I think and definitely time to get to town. I always seem to end up looking in Next so would really welcome some shop suggestions.

if you are on train for 3 hours you should change at other end anyway.
