Any tips for a waxing virgin (wuss)?

AnnieShamrockInYourEar · 19/06/2009 14:39

I've bought some bikini line wax strips.
I tried this morning, warming them, smelling them (mmm), laying them near my fuzz, thinking about it.
But I couldn't bring myself to do it...

Do I need to get drunk to do it?

Any longer and I will have to resort to Veet again...

Help!

Take a pain killer and do it.

jugglingwoman · 19/06/2009 15:39

The quicker the better - get your other half to do it for you!

YanknCock · 19/06/2009 15:42

Pay someone else to do it.

Don't get drunk, god knows where the stuff will end up!

TabithaTwitchet · 19/06/2009 15:44

I would say go and have it done professionally. It is much easier, you can just concentrate on lying there listening to the tinkly music and gritting your teeth, clenching your fists etc and not have to worry about actually ripping off the hair yourself.
Also professional beautician will do much better job, as (a)they are used to doing it, (b) they can see what they are doing better (unless you are a contortionist/ have an enviable flat stomach and (c) will not wimp out half way through because of the pain.

melmog · 19/06/2009 16:03

Yes, definately pay someone to do it. Those strips have never worked on me anyway. And you'll be all wonky!

AnnieShamrockInYourEar · 19/06/2009 16:12

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping to avoid going to a salon (cheapskate DH), so I maaaaay just give it another go first.

Tabitha, I'm no contortionist nor do I have a flat stomach. Dammit!

Methinks there maybe be some cheap wax strips on eBay soon...

Well if you are set on doing it yourself, my top tip is to use lots of talcum powder or similar to stop the wax sticking to your skin.

But I have wimped out every time half way through trying to wax myself (and made a total mess of the bathroom to boot - yes, I am totally inept )

YanknCock · 19/06/2009 16:49

Have you trimmed beforehand? I think there's an optimum length for waxing, but can't remember exactly what it is (but really long =bad). And find a pair of knickers you don't mind getting wax on, so you can use them as a guide (and keep the other hair from being accidentally caught up in the wax).

AnnieShamrockInYourEar · 19/06/2009 18:56

Thanks guys. I may well wimp out again.
I have previously Veeted, so it's about 4mm (I haven't measured exactly!). Which is what it says on the box it needs to be. So it's now or never.

Gulp.

So now everyone knows the state of my...eh... whatyoumaycallit...

I have a q to ask
I normally tidy my bikni line( aka pubes)
with a razor.
If i had a wax pre holiday how long would it not grow for?

YanknCock · 19/06/2009 19:05

I had mine done about two weeks ago, and it's still tidy.

brendaAndEddie · 19/06/2009 19:06

no regrowth at ALL?

YanknCock · 19/06/2009 19:13

brenda, just for you, because you got my 'italian restaurant' reference on the other thread....

Have just dropped trou in front of DH and asked if he can see any regrowth. I can't bloody tell because I'm nearly 7 months pregnant and can't see anything. DH says it looks the same as two weeks ago. Waxing is fab!

VinoEsmeralda · 19/06/2009 19:18

Around 3 weeks before regroth comes through. hairs are also finer after waxing.

I bought the latest Braun epilator which can be used for the bikiniline but till date I havent mastered the courage to do it

YanknCock · 19/06/2009 19:24

I just sold my Braun epilator on ebay. Again, I am not good at self-inflicted pain. I stupidly listened to a friend who swore blind they didn't hurt. Figured if I could do my legs twice with it, it would be the same as two waxing sessions. I think I managed full leg once, and half leg once before I threw it in a drawer to rot for months! Never got near my bikini line with it....more power to you Vino, if you can do it!

melmog · 19/06/2009 21:22

Word of warning if you're going to use an epilator..... tie your (head) hair back first. Had to cut a clump of mine off nearly at the root. was looking too closely at my leg hair and not paying attention and the stupid machine got ridiculously tangled. I am useless at these things though.

AnnieShamrockInYourEar · 22/06/2009 13:13

Still haven't done it...

I find a glass of wine first works wonders! I only do legs though. Can just about bring myself to do bikini line but it's not worth it and under arm waxing makes me cry.

bleh · 22/06/2009 16:12

Don't try epilating your lady garden. I tried a couple of times (stupidly) and it hurts like crazy. Trying to epilate armpits is even WORSE.

I've now been going for a wax once a month for about a year and a half, and I've noticed that it's taking longer to grow back, if at all (in some places). I dream of the day when I won't have to go through waxing/epilating/shaving ever again.

LuLuBai · 23/06/2009 18:08

I epilady 'down there' it is OK but only for a basic tidy up. Not for anything dramatic like a Brazilian.

The only wierd thing is that since the most recent pregnancy I have become v. prone to ingrown hairs. So am currently shaving but hate the freqency with which I have to do it and the thicker bristles.

aGalChangedHerName · 23/06/2009 18:12

God Annie don't DIY!!!

Go to a salon and get it done properly at least the first time. It's not that expensive. I only pay about £12 for a brazillian.

VinoEsmeralda · 24/06/2009 21:24

aGal where do you live as here is starts from £35 for a brazillan (sans derriere)!

LuLuBai · 25/06/2009 08:43

Was wondering exactly the same thing. Might be worth a trip to aGal's local salon as it's 35+ round here.

AnnieShamrockInYourEar · 25/06/2009 11:05

Well, going against all your warnings.... I DID IT!!!!

AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!!!

Firstly, Yeouch!
Secondly, actually it wasn't THAT bad. It was just the anticipation. And the sound...

So I kept going, it's a bit patchy and tingly and I won't be displaying it just yet, a touch red!! Surprisingly I wanted to keep doing it, rather than just stop cos it was too painful. The pain only lasted the split second, accompanied by a high-pitched 'Aaaaaaaaaah'.

I suspect I need a bit more practice.
And don't re-do the same patch straight away, no no no no.

And not a drop of wine in sight (well it was only 10am!)

Should be easier next time??

Thanks for all the support nonetheless. I think posting on here made me do it, whereas otherwise I would have completely wussed out.
Only took me a week to build up the courage!
