1980s Indian fringed skirts-where?

Long ago in the eighties when I was 'alternative' these long skirts were all the rage amongst goths. They were made of heavy cotton, embroidered coarsely in the same colour, long, had an elasticated waistband and had fringing at the bottom. The heavy cotton draped nicely. Of course most goths wore them in black.
They were sold in hippy shops. The kind of places that also stocked incense and tiger balm.
I have a yen to acquire one again. There don't seem to be hippy shops around here.
Any ideas?

Try charity shops for the real deal.
My mum had a pink one that I used to swan around in when I was about 8

Try it on Ebay...

FlyMeToDunoon · 30/05/2009 09:30

anything here?

I love this stuff!

mrsmaidamess · 30/05/2009 09:40

I think you'll probably find them back in the 1980's.

cocolepew · 30/05/2009 09:42

?

mrsmaidamess · 30/05/2009 09:44

I'll stop being pedantic now.

I saw in The Ideal world shopping chanel these crinkly sparkly Indiany skirts.

Now I warn you, the model looks ATROCIOUS in the pictures, she's wearing court shoes with them for chrissakes but as an item, (sans fringing I'm afraid) they are quite ethnicky

brace yourself

mrsmaidamess · 30/05/2009 09:46

OMG that dragon site!

FlyMeToDunoon · 30/05/2009 09:50

Thank you.
However this is the sort of thing I am after, except in black and in a 10 rather than an 18.

I have seen them in hippy shops still, you will just have to keep looking
try the fairtade type places or you will have to trawl the carboots/charity shops/jumble sales all summer long
happy hunting!

Blackduck · 30/05/2009 10:00

I had a green one (complete with bells on the tie on the waist) that I wore to death (all the wa round southern India - sigh)..... haven't seen one for sale for YEARS, haven't seen a 'hippy type' shop for years either.... blackduck wanders off wondering if she has finally turned into her mother.....

FlyMeToDunoon · 30/05/2009 10:03

omg I had forgotten the bells on the string at the front!
Ah well.

O god....I'm having a flashback to 1989.

First year of university.....doc martins, long skirt....BIIIIIIIGGGG jumper.

Not sure anyone would welcome the return of that outfit personally.

belgo · 30/05/2009 10:34

I would notyummy. That's my style and I'm sticking to it.

TBCoalman · 30/05/2009 10:44

Is there anything here you like?

moonmother · 30/05/2009 10:54

I think the nice sunshine brings the 'alternative' back out in some, I know it does me

Here's another link - don't seem to have the indian fringed skirts , but they do have some nice 'gypsy' style ones

LovelyTinOfSpam · 30/05/2009 11:09

You need a trip to camden

Hassled · 30/05/2009 11:10

This is SO spooky. I stood in the shower not an hour ago thinking about these skirts and whether you could still get them - I had them in several colours. They were strangely flattering when I was 18 or so.

Grattage · 30/05/2009 11:14

dont
they are vile.

missmama · 30/05/2009 12:00

I hve a few in my wardrobe
With bells and embroidered mirrors no less.

belgo · 30/05/2009 12:20

Yes I had one with bells one. I've just bought this skirt in red. It's gorgeous, but unfortunately I don't have the flat tummy to show off with it.

FlyMeToDunoon · 30/05/2009 12:37

Thanks for all the links.
The trouble is that I am fixated one the skirt of my youth and no other gypsy, velvet or boho wrap will do it for me now.
littlerach hilarious that a shop that sells hippy/goth skirts is called Uptown Girl!
I haven't been to Camden in years. Sigh
Belgo that skirt is gorgeous.
