What eye makeup would you wear to go with monochrome?

It is a blck tie event, I have black dress, and am wearing long string of white freshwater pearls. Shoes and bag are champagne silk.

But, what makeeup? I have pale blue/grey eyes and quite like it when people wear eyeshadow BUT you can only see it when they blink. So, is this a good look? And what colour for me eyes? Plus, any product/application tips?

Any ideas re nail varnish also welcome

Sorry I know I am asking alot!

You could do several things.

One look is the Jennifer Aniston thing: neutral tone all over and then black eyeliner inside lids and dark, dark brown eyeshadow applied around eye as an eyeliner. Mascara, a little blusher, lip gloss. The look is quite natural, but with heavy eyeliner. The emphasis is on shiny/glowing, so a subtle but glowy moisturised foundation is quite important.

Another look is dark grey on the lid. Laura Mercier have a good one which is dark grey/blue. Again, team it with a fairly low key colour above the lid and either a lip gloss or a fairly low-key colour lipstick.

And another might be smokey eyes in either black/dark brown (socket and eyeliner) with either lighter brown/light grey) above.

You might want to go a little further with one of these looks and try a red lipstick, but if you do, tone down the eyes.

If you go for red nail varnish or lippy, Chanel do lovely reds but try them to see which one suits you. Eg. Although I do love deep reds and blue-reds, reddy/orange is the type that loves me back.

Bobbi Brown make-up counter will give you a how-to for the last one, Laura Mercier/Space NK girls will do the middle one. for the first, just buy a copy of a mag (Grazia, anyone?) with a photo of Jennifer in it and copy.

Have a great time.

I would be tempted to go down the Dita Von Teese route and do full on 50's glamour with minimal eye make up, only a slick of liquid eyeliner and mascara but red lippy. Bright red nails too. Classic.

eyes look great She actually has some pale grey eye sahdow on

Wow thanks cherryblossom and mrsmaidamess great suggestions there. I do like the red idea - but I wore this for halloween and it looked awful once it had started to come off.

Any ways of making it look great all night long?

If you want to go for red lips, try either a Chanel lipstick (which are very long lasting ime and very moisturising) or Max Factor's Lip Finity. The Lip Finity give a lovely matt finish without being drying and really does stay put for hours - regardless of whether you are eating and drinking too.

If you go for the regular lipstick option, you need to apply foundation to your lips, use lipliner (lightly, on the inside of lip line to avoid that Jodie Marsh look), apply lipstick, blot, powder then another coat of lipstick.

Ok, the chanel and lipfinity sound good - and I kind of like the idea of a matt finish.

Do I just go to the counter and ask them which one is best match? The thing is too, I will be having a spray tan. Does that mean one that looks great on the normal me, will not look great on tanned me? Or, with a good red lipstick, should it look great whatever?

OOh spray tan and 50's glam don't really go IMO. Pale is better. praps going for the Jennifer Aniston look would be best with tanned skin.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 28/05/2009 22:27

Hmm......I think if you do want to go with a spray tan and the red lippy then you definitely need a matt finish. A gloss finish will look trashy....imo.

Forgot to extoll virtues of MAC. And if you are going for the Jennifer Aniston look then can heartily recommend their Lip Glass range for a pale but interesting finish Again, if you are going with red their girlies are experts at finding the exact shade for you.

Be careful with Chanel.....I have had mixed experiences with their counter staff - some are fab and others have left me looking like my gran......

The Lip Finity you choose for yourself but there are always stacks of testers for you to try out.

I will have the spray tan because the dress is strapless and shortish (and I am not a fan of the lots-of-white-flesh-on-show look for a glam evening event) I was looking on the chanel website and they have this eyeshadow that you shake and is liquid, and you can blend or apply neat etc... Looks good too. I guess I would just go for a brown shade?

Also - another question - I will have a spray tan so no need for foundation really, but I do want to have glowing skin too. How would I achieve that without giving my face that made-up-paler-than-body look (that some WAGS seem to sport) justuse bronzer? Or something else?
