And bought a navy shift dress (haven't worn navy for decades....) can I get away with black shoes (already have a pair which are the perfect style for the dress) or will it look odd at a summer event?

Noooo. Please don't do it. Black shoes with navy v bad at best of times - at a summer event definite no no.

GrapefruitMoon · 26/05/2009 17:09

What colour then (please don't say white!) I may never wear the dress again (or at least not very frequently) so am loathe to shell out lots for new shoes.

red.

mollyroger · 26/05/2009 17:11

oh, no scrap that. Silver!

noddyholder · 26/05/2009 17:12

Gold!

BonsoirAnna · 26/05/2009 17:13

No no no black! Silver, gold or tan.

mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 17:13

Yes gold would look very chic. I'm sooo into gold at the moment, especially matt gold. Lurve it.

GrapefruitMoon · 26/05/2009 17:14

Err it's daywear, a formal event. Think silver would not be right. The style of the black shoes is slingback with kitten heel so would want a similar style.

Silver would be fab for a formal event - silver sandals and a silver bag.

movingnow · 26/05/2009 17:17

err, I'd go for navy shoes

MmeLindt · 26/05/2009 17:22

I wore a navy dress at the weekend with black shoes, it would not have occured to me to wear any other colour.

Certainly not navy. What is this strange obsession about wearing the same colour of shoes as the outfit that the Brits have? My mum insists Dad should wear grey shoes with grey trousers.

mollyroger · 26/05/2009 17:24

because black and blue look like a hospital uniform.

mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 17:26

How about nude colour?

taupe sling back

mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 17:26

more

noddyholder · 26/05/2009 17:27

It is not to do with matching just that black shoes with navy dress is a bit 'heavy' esp for day.The emma hope website has some nice ones with a bow at the front low sling backs but they are v expensive.I think LK Bennett do that sort of thing cheaper.Although i still think metallic would be lovely

TheCrackFox · 26/05/2009 17:27

Nude colour shoes go well with navy

how about these

or these?

MmeLindt · 26/05/2009 17:27

Only if they are clumpy clog style shoes, surely? Blue and are fine together.

Tan is ok. I can cope with tan.

squeaver · 26/05/2009 17:28

I'd go for nude plus fake tan and bare legs.

I actually love navy, I don't think it's middle-aged

traceybath · 26/05/2009 17:33

this colour would look fab with navy

Or nude/camel.

I also love navy - its very chic and flattering.

nkf · 26/05/2009 17:36

I think a navy shift dress sounds lovely. It makes me think Audrey Hepburn. I have to say I would have worn black shoes with it but then I don't have a shoe fetish and so don't buy ones that I rarely wear. Maybe I should.

MmeLindt · 26/05/2009 17:36

traceybath
Damn you for linking to the Boden shoes. I did not even know they do shoes. The magenta ones are fab.

lou33 · 26/05/2009 17:37

navy is very fashionable atm

traceybath · 26/05/2009 17:38

I know mmelindt - although they seem to have suddenly sold out of that colour.

I was waiting for the sale . . .

mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 17:39

Whatever colour you go for, a slight platform is essential

Not that I want to add extra pressure or anything!

bundle · 26/05/2009 17:40

this is why i never wear navy

that and it reminds me of school uniform
