I have this dress, I want to dress it down.

I've bought this

It's for a 60th wedding anniversary in a smartish pub, so I don't want to be all glammed up, but am at a loss how to tone it down. I thought silver sandals, maybe, and a cardi?

If you want advice on dressing down you are looking at the wrong person. I say go for fll on glamour.

But your ideas are good, a bright blue cardi (uniqlo have some lovely electric blue ones) OR some funky wedges might tone it down a smidge.

paisleyleaf · 26/05/2009 13:35

Oh that's nice!
Silver sandals would go.....but I think of them as the opposite of dressing down.
Boots? but I can't tell how long the dress is.
Brown sandals?
But the silver would look nice

BethAndHerBrood · 26/05/2009 13:42

Mmmmm..... wedges are a good idea. I LOVE wedges! Maybe wedges and a cardi in a contrasting colour?

God, I'm shit at this! And whatever I wear with it , it will be wrong and I'll stand out like a sore thumb.

think silver sandal would be great if you were going for glamour, but as you want to dress down then probably wedges, but nothing too clunky as it wouldn't suit the dress.
Maybe something like these? with this and a shrug/cardi in blue

BethAndHerBrood · 26/05/2009 13:49

Not keen on those wedges, a bit too heavy for me. But I love the clutch. Bit impractical though, as I have to lugg so much stuff about with me I might as well use a suitcase! I have a 2 year old to run after too, really high heels not so good!

Would it be the right shape to wear over trousers or leggings, with wedges?

paisleyleaf · 26/05/2009 13:52

I was thinking about leggings/trousers
but can't tell the length properly

BethAndHerBrood · 26/05/2009 13:54

No, I definately couldn't wear it over trousers or leggings. Would feel like a fool, and look really, really terrible! Plus, DH ould have a heart attack, he's very conservative.

IMO it looks perhaps a little dainty for wedges - what about flats, a plain cardie, and subtle accessories?

BethAndHerBrood · 26/05/2009 13:59

I like the sound of flats, cardi and subtle accessories.

Now, where to buy nice flats? I could have silver ones then, couldn't I?

mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 13:59

It's a very dressy fabric, quite shiny. Maybe some coloured ballet flats

ici, in red avec une cardigan rouge?

Podrick · 26/05/2009 14:00

I love your dress!

A black cardigan and black shoes/sandals and black beads would make it less glam imo.

BethAndHerBrood · 26/05/2009 14:02

Can't wear red, am a ginge. I like the pewter colour of those ballet pumps, but there's only red and black on the website.

mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 14:03

M&S have loads of metallic pumps in store. I have the pleated pair, 19.50

BethAndHerBrood · 26/05/2009 14:04

I wondered about black, but thought it might be a bit dull. The "do" is at the start of july, thought I should try to be summery!

OP posts:
mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 14:13

Black is dull. Choose matching shoes and cardi in another colour.

MmeLindt · 26/05/2009 14:13

These are nice

or these

I would wear black with that dress. It is lovely, btw.

mrsmaidamess · 26/05/2009 14:14

Oh dear me Those button ones are awful! sorry.

MmeLindt · 26/05/2009 17:23

You may be right, Maidamess. I would not wear them myself, but the style (low heel slingback) would go well with the dress and be practical for running after toddlers.

princessmel · 26/05/2009 17:25

I'd go for tan flat gladiator type sandals. With a cardi and chunky bangles maybe.

Clure · 26/05/2009 18:32

not sure if these in blue might be a bit much
or these pewter pumps

Clure · 26/05/2009 18:34

these in silver

BethAndHerBrood · 26/05/2009 18:46

You are all being very helpful, thankyou very much!

I do not like the blue pumps, but quite like the pewter ones. The ruffley pumps are not me, sorry, but thanks for the effort.
