how to do mid/long hair for wedding (guest not bride!)

Am going to good friend's wedding in a couple of weeks and want to put a bit of effort in. My hair is longish - just below shoulders, kind of straight with a bit of a wave. I don't want to go for the usual just blow dry and straighten. My dress is vaguely 50's style and the wedding will be quite laid back with jazz music. I only ever have a pony tail in so not sure where to start looking for ideas. Nothing complicated but might even go to hairdresser as a frieds dh is a hair dresser so could go on the day to have something done.

Why not have it in a chic 50s-style chignon (think Grace Kelly in Rear Window)? You'd prob have to blow dry then set on large rollers to get body, then twist up and pin with either invisible kirkby grips (Boots do hair coloured ones) OR you could make it a feature with a lovely flower clip. Or summat.
