Graduation ceremony

What does Mother of the Graduate to be wear to the ceremony thing? Have ghastly feeling is akin to a wedding, please tell me I am wrong. Looks like quite a formal do. Will force suggest DH wears his 'nice' linen suit.....

To mine my mum worse a nice dress with heels. Mine was during the day though. Kind of a fancy lunch with the ladies kind of outfit she described it as.

Agree with sophable.....needs to be something you feel fab in. I seem to remember there was a whole mix at my graduation (Hull) from "mother of bride" type outfits (really ??) to more smart-casual items. If you love dresses then I would treat yourself to a great day dress, otherwise go for a trouser suit.

Oxbridge is distinctly mother of the bride/formal suits.

yeah but even there aveng if you looked fabulous and smart you'd be absolutely fine. there is no need for mother of the bride hideousness in this day and age. even at weddings!

I don't tend to wear dresses so was thinking black linen trousers with heels (on shoes obvs not the trousers...) and perhaps new dressy top or new plainish top with new chunky necklace???

At least will feel comfortable, if not fab (too old these days to feel REALLY fab plus daughter is v fab herself....).

(It's the same university as one of Xenia's offspring attends I have noted, now wondering if she'll be there......isn't Oxbridge btw, so not THAT formal)

I am more or less the same weight since before giving birth all those years ago (and twice more) but have changed shape somewhat.... and certainly cannot be arsed to be 'fashionable' any more.

That sounds just right. I had to hold my mum back from getting a hat because it's just not like that (Cambridge BTW, so one where you might expect things to be on the dressy side), I think she wore a jersey dress with heels in the end.

Mine's the 17th margot, so it might be you who does the reporting!

I do have a lovely rust coloured dress in fairly classic style - it's quite a few years old, but I didn't wear it much before I put the weight on. I always felt good in that, but it's definitely a hot weather dress, so I'll need a back up in case of bad weather.

My son graduates in July. I am planning to wear a long dress with a dark pink short sleeve shrug as it's summer. It's a per una with a slight heel shoe. Is this appropriate. Its a jade with dark pinks and purple pattern outlines figure. Can some one help

Hi, I work at a university and I would say that most people wear summery dresses and heels, but linen trousers certainly won't look out of place. Dress code is definitely less formal than a wedding, don't think I've seen anyone in hats/fascinators etc before (not oxbridge). Graduation week's lovely, so nice to see everyone dressed up and looking so proud. Enjoy!

I work in a university (not Oxbridge or red brick!) and there has been a trend in recent years towards more formal wedding type outfits at graduations. A few hats and even fascinators last year.
go for slightly less 'mother of the bride' and choose something smart but confortable as most of the day will be spent sitting in a hot hall.

I am wearing this with a white jacket and navy heels to my DD's graduation at the end of June.

I'm planning on wearing linen trousers with a top, then a long linen jacket for DD's graduation.

There's a formal the evening after graduation at my daughter's college. Will most mums be changing into something more dressy for that?

What do mothers wear to daughters graduation? I only wear maxi dresses in summer x thinking of summer trouser suits ? Help me please x size 14 / 16
