Are sarongs so wrong?

And if so, why?

I went and bought a giant piece of leopard print chiffon type material that I thought I could use as a wrap for cool evenings on holiday.....or....dare I say it, a sarong type thingamy to just wrap around to go for lunch on the beach on holiday

Have I made a fashion faux paux, come on, honest opinions on why they are so wrong?

Sarong they're right?

Better than sitting in a nice restaurant at lunch time in bikini - although I usually throw on a pair of short/hotpant things. Ideal to cover up... but I'm no expert.

LetThemEatCake · 18/05/2009 21:50

they're fine as long as you have toned abs and a good hip to waist ratio

HolyGuacamole · 18/05/2009 21:55

Oh toned abs you say? I was hoping to cover up my untoned abs, haha! However, I have good waist to hip ratio (I think). Big hips, smallish waist and smallish muffin top belly

If I had toned abs I wouldnt be hiding them under a sarong!!!

HolyGuacamole · 18/05/2009 21:59

ROFL geordie!! Me too, if mine were toned, I'd have them out on show, even in this country!

hang on a sec, how are you planning on wearing this sarong??

I tie mine low down, under belly button, just above hip bone

Did you mean a full body thing??

Furball · 18/05/2009 22:07

what about a saress!

HolyGuacamole · 18/05/2009 22:07

Erm, I dunno yet, it is a long bit of material, a beach wrap type pf thing, but really it is just a large rectangular piece of floaty material

I looked up some styles and like the one you say and also folding it in half to make a shorter skirt thingamy. Was also thinking of tying around my bustline sort of thing (think it would be about knee length from the bust), kinda like a towel when you come out of the bath? Or is that a no?

oi, listen up

sarongs are not wrong

walking around tesco, maybe

on hols in a hot climate, they are essential

don't let the sarong-haters sway you, they are fine

I have several and I look fabulous daaarling

LetThemEatCake · 18/05/2009 22:09

towel style is no.

Buy a kaftan if you want to do that - check out www.beachcafe.com .. or maybe .co.uk. can't remember

Mumsfruitandnut · 18/05/2009 22:13

I have a Saress. I didn't know it was a Saress though ... until now.

MarmadukeScarlet · 18/05/2009 22:16

I have a kaftan for dry wafting in my swimmers but have a sarong for sticking on when wet and wrestling an escape determined DS - you cannot elegantly don a kaftan when you are slightly damp.

Oh the sarong lovers are coming out! Woohoo! Lubbly jubbly!

So they are ok, but just not tied like you've came out the bath

I have 2 kaftans, but each time I try them on I feel like . Always take them away but never wear them. Weird. Other people wear them and look fab but on me......I dunno, just weird, even with big bug eye glasses. I shall maybe try a floppy hat....is that a bit "good life"? Or is good life cool?

AnyFucker · 18/05/2009 22:29

thats what I do hana

classy, huh ?

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/05/2009 22:31

Love sarongs - they really signify holidays!

I wear them round the waist or as a halterneck dress, just depending on the type of sarong (i.e. how big it is) and what I feel like.

MrsMattie · 18/05/2009 22:32

They're fine. Who really prances about the beach looking 'good'? Push comes to shove, you're on the beach, wearing a bikini/cozzie and you want to go for a walk and get a drink or summat...a sarong is easy and covers your arse.

I feel the same about kaftans@Holy

macthecatsmum · 04/06/2012 19:00

hip bones? oh yes i remember them. haven't actually seen them for many summers. I am actually going to try and make a sarong with straps(al la saress) and if it goes wrong-will just be a sarong.

dexter73 · 04/06/2012 20:28

This thread is 3 years old - that is probably why!!

Selks · 04/06/2012 20:52

Aaarrgh I hate this "right / wrong" thing with clothes. If you like wearing a sarong then wear one. Don't listen to the fashion snobs.

Rant over.

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/06/2012 20:54

Well did you wear it? [can op even remember as thread is so old] Wink
