Has anyone put red hair dye on hair with blonde highlights?????

I am wanting to go back red after several years of being blonde.
I am talking very red.
A few hair stylists I have spoken to have been reluctant to do it, as they say it is a faff. Need to strip colour etc...
I am prepared to do whatever it takes to get the job done properly as last hair salon convinced me to stay light and £70 later I hate it.
I never have time to go to hair salon(which I hate anyway)
Sooooo my sil is a hairdresser and has took a few strands of my hair and is going to do a few colour tests.
Now my problem here is trust... She did my hair for years(very affordable)_ but the last time she made a bit of a mess with the colour and used bleach and it bled in patches. She never said anything, and neither did I Cost quite a bit at salon to try cover it up.
She has said that I can put red on my hair straightaway, but I am worried it may go pink.
Anyone know or has anyone any experience with home hair dyes. Am I better to dye my hair brown, wait a while then use home red hair dye???
Any advice greatly recieved. Feeling low and desperate for uplift.

Don't do it. A colleague did this a couple of weeks ago, she had blonde highlights, tried to put a red die on it and the highlights went shocking pink. Cue tears and an expensive trip to the hairdresser.

Your SIL sounds like a pretty dodgy hairdresser, you have had an awful experience already and she doesn't sound like she knows what she is doing.

I hate going to a hairdresser too (hours spent there reading magazines, the last time I went it cost £110), but honestly if you want to do something so drastic you will need to. And be warned that once you have red hair, it is a nightmare to get rid of, and it takes a huge amount of effort and faff to get the red out if you decide you don't like it.

yeah, i do this on purpose sometimes to get bright pink on the hi-lighted bits
not for the faint hearted

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/05/2009 15:51

Plus, don't try a brown home dye on it if it is blonde because it will go a fetching shade of khaki (and another trip to the hairdresser will nbe needed )

pippo · 13/05/2009 15:52

yes did at home & my hair went pink too, know someone who goes to v £ salon and she had this done recently and looks good. Maybe you get what you pay for??.

Thanks. I was red for about 7/8 years and loved it, not sure how I ended up blonde. I know red fades quite quickly, but my hair was so glossy and in great condition.
I did once try a home dye on this when at uni and bits did go pink.
I dont mind having it done at hair dressers but havnt found one yet that will do it.
I love the hair on that advert when she buys those red shoes in the window. The hair dresser in one salon I went to said 'oh its probably a wig'.

My hair grows quite quickly and although I am not that dark,I just feel scruffy when the roots show and with two little ones I just never get time to go to salon on a regular basis iykwim.
I recall roots were more forgiving when I was plum/red before

Yes and it went orange :D

I had blonde streaks put underneath my dark brown hair year ago and then the hairdresser dyed the blonde bits red for me. Worked really well but, only lasted a few washes.

Go to a professional you trust!

trixiethepixie · 13/05/2009 15:59

Learn from my mistake and don't do it - it will go pink and you will have to spend 5/6 hours sitting in the hairdressers to get hair stripped and re-dyed and a whopping bill.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 13/05/2009 16:00

sooo shall i just go brunette then, and maybe later go red??

you are prob best using a warm brown (red tones) tones...otherwise you can go green!

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/05/2009 16:03

I know they're expensive, but go to a good, fashion conscious salon like Toni & Guy. My stepson used to work there and he had hair the colour of Ariel from the Little Mermaid. They do cost a fortune but they do a good job, this isn't the job you want to trust to your local Krazy Kuts salon!

Anyway, once the hairdressers have done the initial job you can top up with home dyes anyway.

cocolepew · 13/05/2009 16:03

Brown then red next, I've did it lots of times and there's no pink this way.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 13/05/2009 16:05

will see if there is a Toni & Guy near me. How much do you think i would be looking at?
I bet his hair looked great. dh said he would pay for our anniversary coming up

WEll, I had half head blonde highlights, cut and blow dry on Saturday in Toni & Guy and it cost £109. I think that having just a tint as opposed to highlights would be less as it takes less time (I think). Other normal salons locally charge about £75 for the same, so it's not that much more really, and they do an excellent job. Plus they give you wine yay (well, they do on Saturdays in Cheltenham!)

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/05/2009 16:15

The stylist who cut my hair on Saturday had bright scarlet hair, it looked so glossy. You never really get blonde hair looking as glossy as red or brown hair, I think.

Yes, stepson's hair looked brilliant. It is blue and blonde now

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 13/05/2009 16:21

well that doesnt sound too bad then to say I just paid £70 and wasnt that impressed, plus I sit there feeling sick wondering what it will turn outlike.
Wine sounds good, might help with the small talk that I hate
I also agree red always looks glossy.
Thankyou all for advice.
