can ancle socks be worn with open tow sandles ?

Hi, my daughter is 4 and has always worn start-rite shoes. Her skin is extreamly soft and if she wears sandles with out socks, they rub and have given her a blister in the past. I took the shoes back and the lady said she couldn't believe they had caused a blister as they were such a good fit and the leather was so soft.
Now I always make her wear ancle socks in the summer, but I'm a bit aware they might look silly with open toe shoes.
If I bought propper closed shoes for the summer, her feet would sweat. She is quite hot blooded anyway.
What do you think? are there any shoes you could recommend for the summer?
I like either white, navy or silver. (basically, some thing that will go with everything).
I buy her start-rite as she's a G fitting. This wouldn't matter though if the shoes are velcro across the arch.

yes, it's fine! ds1 has quite sensitive feet and atm refuses point blank to wear sandals without socks.

that said, you might find that after she has worn the sandals in a bit more (with socks) that the leather softens even more and shapes to her foot better and you can try going without them if you want to.
otherwise, sometimes you can get sandals with a closed toe which you might prefer if she's wearing socks. still nice and open and summery, but witha little bit over the toe.

as I say though, at 4 yrs old they can definitely get away with socks and sandals IMO!

Shops tend to recommend they wear socks for a bit just to break the sandals in - perhaps just around the house. Could you try that?

Must confess i'm not keen on the sandals and socks look myself.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2009 11:23

I was going to scream NO very loudly but on a child you can get away with it I'm sure Clarks had closed toe sandals though.

mummyloveslucy · 11/05/2009 11:24

Thanks, I'll look for some with a closed tow, if not then she can wear them in around the hose for a while.
I've seen some nice Geox ? ones. are they good?

Oh I think little girls with frilly ankle socks and open toe sandals look lovely >

saintmaybe · 11/05/2009 18:07

No, on kids it's fine and cute. As long as the socks are clean and matching.

cuntish · 11/05/2009 18:50

bernards cat - your comment is not interesting

TrillianAstra · 11/05/2009 18:56

I was also going to scream 'noooo' but I suppose a 4-year-old is allowed

DSM · 11/05/2009 18:57

God, I opened this thread thinking NO NO NO.. didn't realise it was for a child. Style is irrelevant for children, happiness and comfort wins.

I would also probably not recommend a superman outfit to a man, but its what my DS wore to the cinema yesterday.

macherie · 11/05/2009 19:23

Bernards cat - you are starting to remind me of someone...keep your catty comments to yourself

BernardsCat · 11/05/2009 19:24

i dont think this is for you to decree thanks very much!

ramonaquimby · 11/05/2009 19:28

what about crocs? they do some cute ones for girls - they won't rub

or some birkenstocks if her feet are big enough (not sure what size they start at)

or doodles - mine never wore socks with the doodles (and didn't blister) and easy to wash in machine

BernardsCat · 11/05/2009 19:30

god ramona i love your name.

macherie · 11/05/2009 19:30

I'm as entitled to express my opinion as you are

jabberwocky · 11/05/2009 19:33

We have gotten some really cute stride rite sandals that are closed toe. But I agree that with kids you can get away with anything.

lambanana · 11/05/2009 20:04

Yep deffo go for a frilly ankle sock - she will look gorgeous!

mummyloveslucy · 11/05/2009 20:04

Thanks everyone, except BernardsCat.
Being dyslexic is not something I can help, just like some people can't help being rude and obnoxious. (sound familiar?)

She had some crocks last summer, with frilly ancle socks. She did look sweet, although she would look sweet in anything.
I agree, comfort is the main priority. I thought I'd better ask though as didn't want other Mums to think I have no fashion sence. (even though I don't)

Ankle" sock can be worn with Sandals* by anyone under 11, I'd say- otherwise they look sad.

mummyloveslucy · 11/05/2009 21:18

That's good to know, she's o.k for another 7 years yet.
My Mum still had me in pinafore dresses at 11.
When I started secondery school, things had to change.
