I need some wise, colour coordinated MNers to help me find the perfect bridesmaid dress......

For starters, why oh why is there not a wedding topic?

I'm looking for a bridesmaid dress (preferably not a proper bridesmaid dress as they seem a little frumpy to me) for my 22 year old sister. I'll also have 4 little bridesmaids aged from 4-12yrs old.

I'll be wearing a light gold dress and really like the idea of having sage green to match. However, I can't seem to find anything suitable in that colour.

I've looked on the Karen Millen website, Coast website, Ted Baker, Monsoon and found nothing

Obviously it's not the colour of the season!

I'm not too worried about the younger girls as they could wear ivory dresses with a sage sash around the middle. But I quite like the idea of my sister being mostly in sage so she looks a bit different.

Does anyone know where I could find something suitable?
Or do you think I should go for a different colour altogether?

The theme will be quite natural and foresty so lots of twigs and ivy and tea lights. The wedding is in September.

Have you lppked at Debenhams? Not just their wedding section but their prom dresses. Got my dress, bridesmaid dress and my mums outfit (all following a loose theme) from there.

Also BHS and M&S do wedding "stuff" now but not yet seen it.

FruitynNutty · 24/04/2009 14:36

Ooh thanks Ruby, I rather like this one but it says no longer available

Sidge · 24/04/2009 14:39

im having this in blue for my wedding in september, they do it in green too

smurfgirl · 24/04/2009 15:31

When is your wedding and what si your budget? Would you consider buying 'proper' bridesmaids dresses?

suwoo · 24/04/2009 15:41

You need Dessy. I bet you'll find something there, they are fab abd each dress comes in so many colours.

suwoo · 24/04/2009 15:43

No idea what style you would prefer out of the 229 they do at Dessy, but here is one in clover for you to get an idea of their colour swatches.

suwoo · 24/04/2009 15:45

Sorry, the above one was moss, this one is kiwi

They do the flower girl ones in all (most) of the colours too.

SoupDragon · 24/04/2009 15:45

You could get a dressmaker to make you one if you find a style you like but not the colour.

BlueCowWondersAgain · 24/04/2009 19:11

FnN - this is my situation but I'm the bm (and I'm not 22 )
The only way of making this work for me was to actually make the dress for me - anything in the shops was too patterned/ wrong fabric. Little bm's look fab in BHS dresses - 2x2 yrs, 2 x 8 yrs, ,but the 'adult' was a real pain, hence having to find fabric and pattern and get going. If you go that way you'll have complete control over the look, and John Lewis do an amazing range of materials - can you find a local dressmaker?

I like your idea of the littlies in ivory with sash, with your sis in the solid colour. But also look at monsoon at the moment as they have lovely little green dresses for the children.

Wish I could swap with you and be in sage - I've got pink

FruitynNutty · 24/04/2009 20:44

Wow, thank you so much!

I love the Dessy website, seen quite a few on there and love the Kiwi colour.

BlueCow - I don't think I've got the creativity or imagination to get the dress made from scratch. Although could go with SoupDragon's idea and get the dressmaker to copy a style - something to think about.
What sort of pink is it you're in? Is it really that bad?

I would hate for my sister to dislike what she'll be wearing. I would rather she pick the style tbh, but keep the sage/kiwi colour.

I might get her to look at the Dessy website.

Ruby - I adore the Fenn Wright Manson dress but it's a bit dark and also £225!!! However, I've no idea how much the Dessy dresses are

I reckon budget should be no more than £150 for my sister's dress. About £50 for the little ones.

LoveMyGirls · 24/04/2009 21:02

The dress i linked is £115

suwoo · 24/04/2009 21:14

I think the Dessy ones are about £175- £200 but you can order them from New York much much cheaper.

When I was a bridesmaid last June (pics on profile) my best friend was brilliant with us and we had exactly the style dress we wanted in the colour she wanted which was chocolate brown.

You sound like a great bride

suwoo · 24/04/2009 21:19

I'm loving this one.

Which length do you prefer? Full length or tea length?

FruitynNutty · 24/04/2009 21:35

Lovemygirls - It's a gorgeous dress! I don't think it's my sister's style though. The venue is very laid back so I think your dress might be too formal. I reckon a tea length would suit my sister more. I don't think a long dress would be ideal for the venue which is here Although my dress will be traditionally long.

Suwoo, Are they really? Maybe a little too much then. How much cheaper are they when ordered from New York? I didn't realise it was an American company.
Re my sis choosing the style, she has to wear it and if she likes the style then she might want to wear it again

OP posts:
suwoo · 24/04/2009 21:41

Possibly under £100 IIRC.

this is super cheap and may be ok if your sister is petite?

suwoo · 24/04/2009 21:43

What a fabulous unusual venue Fruity, I would love to be invited to a wedding there.

FruitynNutty · 24/04/2009 21:53

Funnily enough Suwoo, I also looked at that dress Yes she is petite, average height but very slim

Haha, you'll have to gatecrash

suwoo · 24/04/2009 21:58

Ooh I might Whats the date .

I will ask my bf which website the Dessy dresses were cheaper on, but you could probably find it with some serious googling.

They don't have millions of stockists here but they have one of each dress in one colour only, but its really worth going for a trying on session.

smurfgirl · 24/04/2009 22:04

My bridesmaids wore pale green dresses by this company -
www.truebride.co.uk/

They were £125.
www.chapmanbrownphotography.com/weddings/helenandjon/pages/09.htm

They came in sage green too.
