Are Birkenstocks (Luxors) comfortable for lots of walking?

Hi all. Been walking about an hour a day to shift the old baby weight and have been in trainers through the winter. Getting a bit warm for those now so wondered if Birkenstocks are as comfortable as they say, and will be ok for long walks - on pavement. Many thanks

Yes, they absolutely are! I have worn them for miles and they are super comfy! Try them on in the shop, just to make sure they suit your feet there are a few variations on thickness of the thong bit of the sandal) but I give them a big thumbs up - and a lot of my friends can be seen sporting them too now the sun's come out! tara sweaty trainers!

I love Birkenstocks but I'd advise against the Madrids for alot of walking.

I just bought some and they are killing my feet trying to wear them in. The ones I've had a couple of years which have 2 wide straps (Arizona I think) were wonderfully comfortable from day 1.

Ooh, I'll have to go upstairs and see what style my Birkenstocks are...have no idea!

FrankMustard · 24/04/2009 14:07

Nothing to say what mine are (if it was where my foot goes, that's all worn off now!) but I also have to say that I bought a pair of John Lewis's own birkenstock style sandals a couple of years back and they were also massively comfy - just not as resiliant as birkenstocks so didn't last as long (but were about £20 cheaper)

The Madrid ones are the ones with one strap across near the toes.. They are killing my feet at the moment

The Arizona ones have 2 big straps.

I bought Madrids and then read one here about lots of people finding them uncomfortable.

Glad I found this thread - I too do lots of pavement walking but I'm finding my Next "Birkenstocks" less than ideal - I want something with a strap around the back of my ankle. But something that doesn't look too frumpy/athletic...Real Birkenstocks are a bit out of my price-range though.

I have been wearing Birk's for many years and I love them. they are worth the money as they last forever. I would wear them anywhere except for a long hike. For that I wear sport sandals called Merrells. They are great as they dry fast if they get wet and they don't let your feet sweat!

I got the Gizeh ones in the end. £40 in House of Frazer. Had them on all day mooching about and they are fab. Thanks
