Very wavy hair short to long-Help!

I am growing my short, short, really quite wavy hair, long again.
ATM it looks like I have been dragged through a hedge backwards.
In this situation in the past I have been able to wear a hat most of the winter but summer is coming this time and I am fed up.
Can I get away with a bandana tied around my head? Or is that just a horrific throwback to my eighties youth?
A fine long scarf wound round and round? Too ethnic?
Or just grit my teeth and get through the next few months.
At least hair grows faster in the summer.

Would a hairband work?
Or you could get clip-in extensions until you look ok without them? like this

Ooh me too!
I have a short crop at the moment and often wonder about letting it grow and embracing the waves/curls but the in-between stage fills me with dread.

This is why I have stopped cutting my hair short - because you look like a bog brush in the in-between stages. Pretty hairclips, fabric hairbands and scarves all help. If you tie a scarf round your head, be prepared for people to think you have had chemo though (or perhaps that was just my crap scarf-tying technique)

Thanks for all of the replies.
I will experiment I think.
I must have the fringe to hide my wrinkles.
I have thought of Tamsin Greig style hairclips but not sure if I can carry off the cutesy look.
I am dreading the summer.

Actually now if I found a decent summer hat that I could wear permanently......

Trip to accessorize is indicated.
